An entire generation has been sold out by successive Governments, trapped by Student Loan interest rates so high even a loan shark would hesitate. I graduated as a doctor with around £75,000 of debt. After years of repayments, I now owe close to £90,000. That is the reality of Plan 2 loans: extortionate interest rates mean balances can rise even while regular deductions are taken from your salary. We’re told this system is “fair.” The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has defended it as such. But I struggle to see how a system can be described as fair when those who can afford to pay upfront leave university owing nothing beyond the headline fee, while those from less financially secure backgrounds carry escalating balances for decades. Freezing repayment thresholds while interest continues to accrue increases the real burden on graduates year after year. The Labour Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, may prefer to debate who first introduced tuition fees, but that does not change the fact that the current Government is actively maintaining this structure. Successive governments may have built this structure, but the current Government is choosing to maintain it. And that choice has consequences. For many of us, this no longer resembles a conventional loan. It functions as a long-term graduate tax that quietly removes a significant portion of our income every month, often well into our 40s or 50s. If this Government believes in growth, productivity and social mobility, it cannot defend a model that disproportionately burdens those without family wealth. Reform is within its power: cap the interest, review the thresholds, and redesign the structure so that repayment reduces debt in a meaningful way. Governing is about taking responsibility for the system you oversee. The question now is whether this Government intends to defend the status quo or change it.

Now I’ve seen it all The Wall Street Journal is actually reporting that Donald Trump taking away loan funding for college majors that don’t financially benefit students is “a good thing” Even calling them “clown colleges” “College programs that don't leave graduates financially better off will soon be ineligible for federal student loan funding. Here's why that's a good thing.” They explain how predatory colleges have become and how by taking away the funding for these programs it’ll force schools to lower their prices and make college cheaper “When the government stops providing taxpayer-funded loans to these programs, it keeps students from making a bad investment, and it incentivizes colleges to either lower prices or reform these programs to make them better. The government shouldn't fund college programs that leave students worse off” “The point of a federal student loan program should be to help students access a quality education, not give money to literal clown colleges.” Honest reporting from the Wall Street Journal… who knew that was even possible There was a study done on colleges and colleges who had students with access to federal student loans and Pell grants had 78% higher prices than other schools that didn’t have those students So this means colleges are skyrocketing prices because federal loans will be given out to cover the costs. Translation: They are robbing Americans blind

Iowa has a cancer problem.. Zach Lahn on Iowa's Cancer Paradox: Rural Outdoor Farmers Face Far Higher Cancer Risks Than Nevada - Despite Nevada's Top Smoking Rate and Iowa's Low Smoking & Active Lifestyle - Zach Lahn states Iowa has "the fastest rate of new cancer of anywhere in the history of human civilization." The top 10 highest-cancer counties are all rural/ag-heavy counties (not urban areas like Des Moines). In the worst counties, lifetime cancer risk is 1 in 2. - Statewide: Choosing to live in Nevada instead of Iowa gives you a 40% lower chance of getting cancer in any given year. - Worst Iowa county vs. Nevada: Up to 70% lower risk in Nevada. - Nevada has one of the lowest overall cancer rates in the U.S. - despite having the highest smoking rate of all 50 states. - Iowa has very low smoking rates (far below Nevada's), yet one of the highest cancer rates. - Lahn points out that rural Iowans/farmers spend their days outside getting physical exercise 12 months a year, Yet these same people have higher cancer rates than someone "working in a cube in Des Moines" - Farmers as a group actually have lower overall cancer rates (thanks to outdoor lifestyle, exercise, lower obesity/smoking), But they have dramatically higher rates of two specific cancers: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and leukemia. Lahn ties these directly to chronic exposure to pesticides/chemicals from the dominant ag companies (Bayer, Corteva, Syngenta). Clip Full Interview
