Hit your children enough for them to feel the sting. Not to the point that they have bruises and blood coming out. Also there should be a reason why you hit them

Children should not live in fear of their parent’s retribution or punishment. Fear is a dishonest tool of control and manipulation, however subtle or covert. And if you have to constantly punish your children for wrongdoing, you are not correctly modeling appropriate behavior for them. Children need guidance, support, and behavioral correction for inappropriate behavior. But, all of this can and should properly be done without the use of fear or manipulation. Children function best when they have *intrinsic* motivation, not extrinsic.

When my kids were young all it took was a look and they knew to bring it down a level. A few spankings were needed. Yet, they all would come to me at night when sick. Not mom, but me. Gotta say for something. They talk about it now as adults and poke fun. Still dreading the look.

Good parents do their job the whole time before it even gets to this point. Child development will teach you to try everything else first. If your first thought is to beat your children, then you aren't doing your job as a good parent. But I understand the context as well.

@Guelph_Gazette This is just condoning child abuse. It doesn't matter if you try to justify it with the bible its still child abuse.

I liked Charlie Kirk, but I could not disagree more with him on this topic. Check out for all the reasons why. @StefanMolyneux

Disagree. I didn't do drugs because I saw a man who suffered brain damage as a result, not because I feared my parents. Our God is a loving, not a fearsome God. Someone can't truly love someone that they fear. That is a distorted love. Self love is taught by fearless parents.

I see this differently though. When you automatically resort to hitting, you've moved from guidance to fear. And fear doesn't exactly teach why something is wrong. Children are delicate… their perception is delicate, hit them enough and you're building trauma

100% Caveat though. I feared that my dad would kill me. He was the physical one. I feared my mother's disappointment. I feared shaming her.

Yes 💯 the neighbors kids screaming right now. 40 years ago. A look from Dad shut me up. Now they just turn up the stereo on the pool deck 😂

If you fear your parents, it's not about honoring them. Just morons are confused about that

Fear of disappointing your parents is more powerful than fear of physical pain. If you have to physically hurt your children to teach them right from wrong then you’re a shit parent

The idea you need to fear an authority figure, tied to man-made folklore from 2000 years ago is outdated, toxic thinking. It’s amazing people of modern day still refer back to it as if we haven’t discovered better data backed ways of handling bad choices and behavior

yes, but the rod also represents guidance. So if you just spank all the time but don't sit down with them after and explain why and how to avoid it and tie it into something biblical for them to understand, all they will remember is you spanking them when they did wrong.

I don’t agree with spare the rod spoil the child. Look at blacks who were beaten during slavery. They continued the practice on their children and there is no scientific data to support that they are more well behaved and or adjusted as adults than any other race. Quite frankly, the opposite!

I was scared of my parents and I turned out good, successful and responsible. Don't smoke nor drink, zero tattoos nor piercing and most importantly... No nose ring.

I didn’t fear my parents and I turned out great with no wild path to who I am today. The difference is literally in the part of “fear” of the lord. It’s respect. I loved and respected my parents so much I wanted to make them proud of me, so I didn’t do these things, and as I grew up those opinions became my own. Yes I got spanked, but it wasn’t rage that was behind the spankings but love and grief that dad had to spank me because it hurt him to see me hurt.

Funny how certain parts of the world are able to create responsible and respectful adults even tho physically hurting your children as punishment is illegal If there was a method to teach your children that didnt involve hurting them wouldnt you choose that instead?..

GlassHeart🎐💖's profile picture

And I think it's important to address that you don't even necessarily have to beat your kids for them to fear/respect you. I used to be so scared of my teachers and obviously they never beat me.

Spanking, etc. can be lazy parenting, it's different for different kids. However, it can also be quite effective, and safer/gentler than leaving them to their own devices.

This is such a flawed and childish concept. What's stopping parents from educating their children on the consequences of poor choices instead of resorting to violence? If anything you're teaching them that they can manipulate people through fear and intimidation...
