@elia_mafhh Your body belongs to your government, you're in a implicit contract where they pay you stuff such as healthcare, and where they get a portion of your income in return on investment, that's why self-harm and suicide are prohibited, because you're voluntarily breaking that contract

@elia_mafhh Risk feels personal, consequences rarely are. Rules exist because rescues and injuries don’t stay “victimless.” Freedom ≠ immunity from responsibility.

@elia_mafhh The problem is that when something goes wrong they expect emergency personnel to risk their lives to save them.

@elia_mafhh Coast Guard just tryna avoid having to either scrub his brains off Tahoe’s rocks, or having to dive to recover his body.

@elia_mafhh If injury occurs the state has to send expensive emergency personnel which also takes them away from real emergency situations depriving the public.

@elia_mafhh It shouldn't be a crime, but the jumper should have to pick up the tab in the event of a rescue.

@elia_mafhh So, by your statement/logic, I should be able to drive around with 10 kilos of black tar heroin in my car, right? There's no victim for me just possessing it

@elia_mafhh When you injure yourself doing dumb shit like this then first responders and other resources have to be wasted on you. Calling it a "victimless crime" is flattening the issue and ignoring the wider implications.

@elia_mafhh You're logic is missing. If I drive down the wrong side of the highway but don't hit anyone, is that a crime?

Rescue personnel risks and costs: If injured, park rangers or emergency responders would need to perform a search and rescue operation, exposing them to physical dangers like difficult terrain or water hazards, while taxpayers foot the bill—National Park Service search and rescue missions cost $6-7 million annually in direct expenses, with individual operations averaging around $895 to $1,635. This diverts resources from other park duties and can lead to burnout among teams. Psychological trauma for rescuers and witnesses: Rescuers often experience acute stress, anxiety, depression, or PTSD from handling recreational accidents, with studies showing higher PTSD prevalence among them compared to the general population. Witnesses, such as other park visitors or bystanders, may suffer similar emotional distress from seeing the injury or failed jump, potentially leading to long-term anxiety or avoidance of similar activities. Strain on doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff: Medical professionals would dedicate time, equipment, and expertise to treat injuries like fractures, spinal damage, or drowning-related issues, contributing to staff fatigue in busy emergency departments where preventable cases add to workload—around 10-12% of hospitalized patients in high-income countries face adverse events annually, amplifying resource strain. Delays for other hospital patients: Resources allocated to treating the jumper's preventable injury could delay care for patients with unavoidable conditions, such as heart attacks or accidental traumas, exacerbating wait times in emergency rooms—studies on fracture admissions in low- and middle-income countries highlight how delays in resource allocation worsen outcomes, a principle applicable to overloaded systems everywhere. This ripple effect might lead to poorer health outcomes or increased mortality for those waiting. Burden on family members: The jumper's family would face emotional stress from caregiving during recovery, alongside financial hits from medical bills, lost wages if the jumper can't work, and potential long-term disability support—outdoor recreation injuries can impose significant economic strain on households, including indirect costs like reduced productivity. In the U.S., uninsured or underinsured cases could escalate to bankruptcy or reliance on public aid.

@elia_mafhh I'll bite. Let's agree with your point only under the conditions that if he didn't complete this jump, and landed on the rocks with a broken back, it's on him to figure it out. No EMS, No cops going to rescue him, no public funds spent to fix his problem.
