It was less than a week (East African games event). I loved Fort Portal and it's food. I have fond memories of the place While there we learnt a bit of Tooro's history.

The Queen Mother first informed me of his illness in November 2025, and we supported efforts to secure specialised treatment for him in Germany and later in the United States. Unfortunately, he died. Throughout his reign as King of Tooro, Oyo was a good person and a good leader. His passing is a great loss to the people of Tooro and Uganda. I encourage the people of Tooro to remain calm and avoid disorganisation, even in this difficult time. May the Lord grant him eternal rest. Amen.

FROM KASAGAMA TO OYO: The Soul of Tooro Endures.This is a story of a kingdom that refused to die. FROM KASAGAMA TO OYO traces the resilience and continuity of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, a kingdom that survived more than a century of betrayal, conquest and political erasure. At the heart of this history is survival against impossible odds. In the late 19th century, Tooro was swallowed by its powerful neighbor, Bunyoro Kitara. The great warrior King Kabarega of Bunyoro stormed across the Rwenzori foothills, annexed Tooro and forced its young princes into exile in Buganda. For years, the royal drums of Tooro were silent. The throne was empty. The elders whispered that Tooro would only remain a footnote in Bunyoro songs. Then came the return. In 1891, a young exiled Prince Daudi Kasagama made a gamble that would change everything. He walked into the camp of Captain Frederick Lugard of the Imperial British East Africa Company, a man with Maxim guns and imperial ambitions, and forged an alliance. Lugard needed a friendly kingdom to check Kabarega. Kasagama needed guns to reclaim his birthright. The deal was sealed under a mvule tree outside what would become Fort Portal. With Lugard Sudanese soldiers behind him, Kasagama marched back into Tooro. His 37 year reign was a rebirth. He embraced Christianity, built churches alongside royal shrines and turned Fort Portal from a bush fort into a royal capital with schools, roads and a palace that welcomed both missionaries and clan elders. That stability became a legacy. His son, Omukama Sir George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III, mirrored him exactly, another 37 years on the throne. Rukidi III was the polished king, the diplomat in a tailored suit who dined with colonial governors in Entebbe and stood tall as Uganda approached independence in 1962. He made Tooro respected across Africa. Using rare restored footage from the Uganda Film Unit, the film brings this era back to life. We see the sombre majestic funeral of Rukidi III in 1965, thousands lining the roads of Kabarole, the royal war drums beating one last time for the fallen king. And then, only days later, the coronation of his 20 year old son, Patrick David Matthew Olimi Kaboyo III. The film shows the ancient ritual, the mock battle where the Crown Prince must fight off a palace imposter to prove he is worthy of the throne, his bare feet on sacred ground, before the crowds of Fort Portal erupt in celebration. But history turned again. In 1967, President Milton Obote abolished all kingdoms. The palaces were locked. The crowns were hidden in banana fibers and smuggled into exile. King Olimi became a man without a kingdom. For nearly three decades, Tooro survived only in memory, in the stories grandmothers told by the fireplace, in the secret preservation of royal regalia by loyal palace guards. Then in 1993, President Yoweri Museveni restored cultural kingdoms. Olimi returned to his palace at Karuzika, older, ill, but still a king. His return was short.
