Video from the asteroid! In 2018, the Hayabusa-2 spacecraft deployed small rovers onto the surface of the asteroid Ryugu. This is a sequence of 15 frames captured by Rover-1B. As the asteroid rotates, the position of the Sun and the surface lighting change. The video spans a period of... show more

🪨 Real footage captured by the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft near the surface of the near-Earth asteroid Bennu! The spacecraft visited the asteroid to refine the calculation of its orbit through the year 2300 and to collect surface samples. 🛰️☝️ Refining Bennu's orbit revealed that a collision with Earth could occur on September 24, 2182, with a probability of 0.04%.

Asteroid Impact on the Moon Caught on Camera An asteroid was captured crashing into the Moon’s surface. Unlike Earth, the Moon has no atmosphere to protect it, so every asteroid strikes at full speed, carving out deep craters that remain for billions of years. These scars tell the violent history of the Moon and remind us of the powerful forces still at work in our Solar System. 👀✨

A unique moment of an asteroid impact on the Moon during the day. Without an atmosphere on the Moon, the asteroid doesn't burn up, but rather slams into the surface at incredible speed, creating new craters—the very same "scars" that have shaped its appearance over billions of years. By ???

Did you know? This mission was born in a bar and it was sketched on a cocktail napkin Two scientists and a Lockheed engineer sat in a Tucson bar, not far from University of Arizona campus. Their idea was rejected by NASA, TWICE for being impractical and too expensive. The spacecraft touched the asteroid surface for only "5 seconds" and collected more than enough samples using a device called, TAGSAM (Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism) which is an engineering marvel. But how does it work? When it contacts the asteroid surface, it releases high-pressure nitrogen gas to fluidize loose material, and capture ✨stardust ✨. Read more about it in my bog, linked below.

In Dec 2020, we collaborated with Japan to return samples from asteroid Ryugu to Woomera in SA as part of the JAXA(Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Hayabusa2 mission. A sample is now the Discovery Centre's latest exhibit. To mark the occasion, we have released a short film. Watch here

The most beautiful formula in calculus! Master one of vector calculus's most profound concepts with this stunning visualization of Stokes' Theorem. This video provides a clear, intuitive animation showing the equality between the line integral of a vector field over a closed loop (boundary circulation) and the surface integral of the curl over the enclosed surface (surface curl). Watch how the circulation around curve C perfectly balances the sum of the infinitesimal rotations within surface S. #calculus #math #stokestheorem #manim #mathematics

ESA's Hera mission has spotted its first asteroids! Hera is on the way to the Didymos binary asteroid system to explore the aftermath of humankind's first attempt to move an asteroid. Though faint, these observations are very encouraging for the performance of Hera's camera.

The first videos of the #asteroid #C0WEPC5 entry in #Russia are coming out on Telegram Messenger . It appears to be very similar to previous asteroid entires (2022 WJ, 2023 CX1, 2024 BX1). Lots of fragments at the end, it probably dropped some rocks in a remote forested area.
