Today, the pre-medical interns who were denied deployment by government have filed a case against the Attorney general and DGHS Ministry of Health- Uganda in Kampala high court to challenge the decision against which these qualifying medical graduates were excluded. There is indeed no doubt that this decision was illogical, unfair and reckless. Our prayer is that the judges Judiciary Uganda review this decision and order for immediate deployment of all medical interns. Note that medical internship is key for full licensure as well as career advancement. Undeployment of medical interns puts our career at a standstill. #DeployAllMedicalInterns #PaidMedicalInternship

Finally, Govt’ has acknowledged that all medical interns require facilitation, and is now going to reinstate the 1m allowance per month to each medical intern. However, going forward, there ought to be a discussion on increasing the 1m, given the rising cost of living and inflation over the years. #KeepingTheGovtInCheck

Hundreds of medical interns staged sit-in protests and candlelight vigils, demanding an increase in their stipend. #KigonduAt50 #InternHostels In a powerful speech at the 50th birthday celebrations of Dr Simon Kigondu President Kenya Medical Association Prof Ruth Nduati, a professor of paediatrics at the University of Nairobi College of Health Sciences, has highlighted the sacrifices made by the founding fathers of the country in starting medical training in Kenya. She highlighted the role of Petro Kigondu my great grandfather from Lancaster to detention to UON Medical School starting. Prof Ruth Nduati has challenged Kenya Medical Association & KMPDU to see how to assist the medical interns, who are currently being mistreated by government. She suggested that some money be set aside by the union to construct interns' hostels in all internship hospitals in the country, so that interns can do their internship in dignified housing. The challenge is on Wisdom indeed does come with age and experience!

The government has said that medical interns will be paid the same amount, UGX 1,268, 929 which is subject to tax resulting to a net pay of UGX 1 million. To me, this is only a short term solution. What happens to the upcoming cohorts? Shall medical interns have to go on strike every time just to get paid? We must end this cycle once and for all. Let the government scrap the National Health Policy that was sneaked in and come up with a properly drafted, permanent solution to the remuneration and welfare of medical interns. And let’s be clear: the demand is UGX 4 million, not UGX 1 million. We need a lasting solution, not temporary fixes every time doctors and interns protest.

He says medical interns provide critical labour after completing their training and should not be expected to serve patients without support for basic needs such as accommodation and feeding. “How do you expect them to show up to take care of us, including us in this place?” Why it matters: the issue touches both health worker welfare and patient care, especially in public hospitals that rely on interns as part of frontline service delivery.
