Nigerian Navy Swift Sea Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV). Nigeria is the only African navy currently operating deployed USVs. In 2024, Nigeria acquired two variants of these high tech USVs, the S-3 SwiftSea Stalker and the S-2 SwiftSea Striker. These advanced USVs are especially needed in the Lake Chad Basin, where their capabilities will provide significant operational value.

Until 2020, Nigerian waters were the piracy capital of the world. The deployment of the Falcon Eye maritime domain awareness system fundamentally shifted that reality. A similar domain awareness framework could be replicated in the northeast, with the Nigerian navy asserting full control over the Lake Chad waterways where ISWAP has long found sanctuary.

OPERATION HADIN KAI TROOPS INTERCEPT FOREIGN SUSPECT, RECOVER ILLICIT DRUGS DESTINED FOR TERRORISTS IN THE LAKE CHAD ISLANDS Troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have recorded another significant operational success in their sustained campaign to degrade the logistical networks supporting terrorist activities in the North East. Acting on intelligence, the troops on Thursday, 9 July 2026, intercepted a suspected foreign terrorist drug courier conveying a large consignment of illicit drugs, alcoholic beverages and other prohibited substances believed to be destined for terrorist elements operating within the Lake Chad Islands. The operation was conducted during an intensive search operations along the Maiduguri–Monguno axis, where troops intercepted a suspicious vehicle travelling towards Kwatan Doron Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State. The suspect, identified as Mrs Rachael Samuel (48), a Chadian national from Kelo in Chari-Baguirmi Province, Republic of Chad, was arrested while conveying the prohibited items. Preliminary findings indicate that the recovered substances were being moved to locations within the Lake Chad Islands, an area known to harbour terrorist elements. Items recovered from the suspect include seven compressed bundles of suspected Cannabis sativa weighing approximately 30 kilogrammes, two 10-litre containers of hydromercuric chloride, popularly known as "Suck and Die," one carton containing 48 bottles of dry gin, 61 bottles of herbal alcoholic beverages all with a market street value approximately running into millions of Naira. Other items recovered include, one mobile phone, two Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, personal effects and cash. The suspect is currently in military custody, while all recovered exhibits have been secured pending handover to the appropriate law enforcement agency for further investigation and prosecution in accordance with extant laws. The successful interception further highlights Operation HADIN KAI's determination to deny terrorists access to logistics and supplies that sustain their criminal activities. Available intelligence has consistently shown that illicit drugs and intoxicants are frequently used by terrorist groups to stimulate fighters, suppress fear and facilitate violent operations. By intercepting the consignment before it reached its destination, the troops have disrupted another critical aspect of the terrorists' support network. The Theatre Command commends the vigilance and professionalism of the troops and assures the public that operations against terrorists and their collaborators will continue relentlessly. The public is encouraged to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies in support of ongoing efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the North East. Military Air Assets Decimate Terrorist Convoy, Neutralize Scores of Fighters in Coordinated Air Offensive Near Cross Kauwa By: Zagazola Makama The Nigerian Military, operating under the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), has recorded another significant operational success against ISWAP terrorists following a series of coordinated intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and precision air interdiction missions around Cross Kauwa and Ali Sherifti in northern Borno State. Zagazola Makama learnt that the operation dealt a devastating blow to terrorist logistics and fighting capabilities, resulting in the destruction of multiple vehicles and the neutralisation of several insurgents attempting to regroup within the Lake Chad axis. Sources said the mission commenced late on June 6 when an ISR platform established surveillance over a suspected terrorist hideout at Cross Kauwa, located along a network of tracks concealed within dense vegetation and scattered tree cover. Intelligence-driven reconnaissance revealed a significant concentration of terrorist activity in the area. Military sources disclosed that during the surveillance mission, operators positively identified approximately 12 vehicles concealed beneath trees and observed the movement of suspected terrorists attempting to evade aerial detection by moving between cover positions. The discovery pointed to what appeared to be a major terrorist staging area used for logistics, movement coordination, and possible attack planning.

This footage of JAS terrorists holding prayers in the Mandara Mountains highlights the very real and growing threat Nigeria faces from militant groups that are expanding in numbers. The Mandara Mountains and the Tumbuns of Lake Chad are the two critical strategic enclaves for Boko Haram and ISWAP. The rugged terrain of the Mandara Mountains serves as a fortified sanctuary for the Boko Haram (JAS) faction. The mountain peaks reaches 1,300 meters, provide natural cover from ground attacks. The NAF has conducted multiple airstrikes on fortified enclaves in Degbewa, Chinene, Wa Jahode, and Loghpere. These strikes specifically targeted hardened positions that had been serving as key hubs for bomb making activities. The Tumbuns of Lake Chad is the primary operational base for ISWAP. The Navy needs to establish a permanent presence on Lake Chad to carry out amphibious sweeps across the islands and disrupt ISWAP’s supply and logistics network.
