I admire the level of organization and exemplary conduct of Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF). Their strong belief in democratic governance is evident in their ability to line up properly, irrespective of their positions, and vote for their representatives in the 12th Parliament of Uganda. This process was led by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

By virtue of the powers enshrined under Article 98(1) of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, and Section 8(1) and (2)(a) of the UPDF Act, 2005, yesterday, on the 17th of February 2024, at the Defence Council meeting, I presented the UPDF Establishment 2021, an instrument of delegated Command, Control, and Administration, to General Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, the Chief of Defence Forces of the UPDF, to command all elements of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces.

The deployment was confirmed in a statement issued by the Acting UPDF spokesperson Col Chris Magezi. The statement sought to reassure the public, opening with the line: “No cause for alarm.” However, Col Chris Magezi clarified that the operation is a direct response to concerning rhetoric from the political arena. “We do not take threats of violence during the election period by some political actors and their supporters lightly,” the statement read.
