Klaus had been in the country for three weeks and hadn't learned a single word of the language. He didn't see the point. Money spoke louder than vocabulary. In a place where most people earned in a month what he spent on a weekend, doors opened when he pointed. Waiters hurried. Drivers nodded. Vendors smiled even when they clearly disliked him. Klaus interpreted all of it as respect. One afternoon he wandered through a crowded market and stopped at a street cart. The vendor's eyes widened when Klaus jabbed his finger at an item on the special menu. The man tried to explain something. Klaus waved him off. "Yeah, yeah. That one." The vendor looked miserable as he took the money. The sushi arrived. Klaus bit into it. Crisp. Rich. Perfectly balanced. Whatever the crunchy ingredient was, it gave the roll a texture unlike anything he'd tasted before. "Now that's good," he muttered as he slowly chewed. He finished every piece, paid, and left. That night, drinking beer on the balcony of his hotel, he mentioned the strange reaction to another foreign traveller. The traveller stared at him. "You don't know what that special means?" Klaus shrugged. He learned that the dish wasn't famous because of its ingredients. It was famous because it had become a symbol of the region's poverty. Families buried under debt sold possessions, homes, futures, and sometimes lost family members to traffickers and criminal networks promising money or work. The special's name referenced those disappearances. Locals avoided it out of shame, grief, and superstition. Klaus listened to the explanation, took a long drink of beer, and looked out over the city lights. "So?" he said. The traveller blinked. "That's your reaction?" Klaus laughed. "Mate, it was the best damn sushi I've had since I got here." The traveller stared at him, trying to decide whether Klaus was joking. He wasn't. "Seriously," Klaus continued. "I'd order it again tomorrow. Hell, I'd order a whole tray." The traveller felt a chill despite the humid night air. Looking at Klaus, he had the sudden, uncomfortable thought that if there were no consequences, this foreigner would gladly consume the entire world and never once wonder what he'd destroyed to do it. Klaus sat there smiling, completely unaware of the horror behind the thought, or perhaps simply not caring. The traveller said nothing. Instead, he quietly slid another beer across the table. Not even out of hospitality.But because something was unsettling about the man. Something that made arguing feel pointless. Klaus took the beer with a grin. "Cheers." Down below, the city carried on through another difficult night. Above it, Klaus drank, relaxed, and wondered whether the market would still be open in the morning.
