Vincent is actually insane with it, but it DID look over animated because nothing else in the entirety of OPs runtime has looked like this. It's so damn smooth. He's a master at his craft.

I think it's important to remember that over-animated doesn't mean poorly animated. Because this is definitely great animation. But knowing when to hold on a pose is an important for building anticipation. If everythings always in flux the tempo is flat. This clips not bad though

I think it looks kinda bad tbh, everything is weird and rubbery looking, like when he shakes that cup it makes it look like it's made of jelly Feels really out of place compared to the rest of the show If it all looked like this it'd be fine

It’s a beautiful approach by Vincent and it is by no means poor work But, I would agree that it is over animated and little exaggerated This scene alone looks better than 90% of one piece

theres definitely merit in the criticism, not only does too many frames makes it look jarring since its a normal dialogue scnee, it will look mroe jarring alongside every other sequence

i still really dont like it, its too smooth to the point it reminds me of them 60 fps videos

That episode was goat animated

It's definitely not "over-animated" This is a pivotal flashback sequence that is happening in the middle of a fight between the two characters you see here. The fidelity of the animation matches the emotional significance and the weight it carries quite well, because it's always these kinds of moments people remember when there is a conflict of values. There is more you can analyze but it would only make sense if you understood these characters in their story context. Attention to detail is what sets true artists and craftsmen apart.

I mean, thats the point. Its supposed to be an emotional moment where kuzan is remembering old times, they make them more expressive and exaggerated to evoke feels on the viewer, thats been One Piece's thing since forever, and it works (pic related)

Overanimation is an issue as big as no animation.

It's called character acting!

This to me is far more impressive than the jangling keys that is big shonen fights with large flashes and explosions. Animating the intricacies of light in the scene and the subtle bobbing of the hair. It's rather excellent and does well to display the emotions of the characters

Unnecessary animation

i love one piece but I dont like this scene, there is no reason to make them look like they are made of jelly.

I love Vincent Chansard usually, but this scene is the exact definition of "over animated". There is a ton of useless animation that doesnt have any purpose. Like why is Taz in One Piece exactly? It s supposed to be gear 5 characteristic, not the whole show

It’s not a bad scene but it’s one of the best examples of less is more. This will never be a classic one piece scene, this will only be remembered for being over animated.

Animation is great and animator is smooth operator

This is a passionate level of animation with levels of detail that were never even needed but did it because they were like fuck you this is beautiful and I'm going to do it

This animation NEED to be approve by the director. Doesn’t matter how smooth or stylish your work is, it must match with what the director have already approved. If an animator decide to change it themselves they will less likely to be hired. So this scene is intentional.
