President Trump says he hopes other U.S. cities are watching his deployment of the National Guard to Washington, D.C., and “maybe they’ll self-clean up, and maybe they’ll self-do this and get rid of the cashless bail thing and all of the things that caused the problem.” Violent crime in D.C. has been declining for the last year and a half after spiking in 2023, according to local police data. So far this year, robberies have dropped by 28% and overall violent crime is down 26%, as of August 11. Last year, violent crime in the capital city hit its lowest level in more than 30 years, the Justice Department said.

The FBI released its 2025 Uniform Crime Report on Friday, showing the nation’s murder rate reached a 20-year low and violent crime saw its largest one-year decline on record. President Trump called it the "largest reduction in violent crime in American history." The FBI's report, which compiles crime data from about 87% of the country's police departments, shows an 18.1% decrease in the murder rate compared with the prior year.
