Finally got around to making a loop from the severe weather sequence from April 23rd (Thursday) to April 29th (Tuesday). This was a very active stretch, with a total of 103 tornado reports, 500 hail reports, and 501 damaging wind reports. Along with this, a total of 264 tornado warnings and 1,218 severe thunderstorm warnings were issued.

A tornado touched down east of Rocky Mountain House Saturday evening, caught on cameras near Highway 11 and Range Road 65. Environment Canada issued a red-level tornado warning at 6:21 p.m. MDT after meteorologists confirmed a severe thunderstorm was producing a tornado near the community, moving east at 15 km/h through Clearwater County. The warning covered Rocky Mountain House and the Crimson Lake area, with damaging winds, large hail, and locally intense rainfall also possible. The tornado warning has since ended.

NHC says: “Based on a blend of the satellite estimates, flight-level wind and dropsonde data, and the fact that the area of strongest winds was likely not sampled by reconnaissance aircraft, Melissa’s peak intensity is estimated to be 165 kt at 1200 UTC 28 October. The dropsonde that measured a mean wind of 188 kt in the lowest 150 m, recorded an instantaneous peak wind of 219 kt (representative of a wind gust) at an altitude of 906 mb, which is the strongest wind ever recorded by a dropsonde in a tropical cyclone”

25 years ago, today, on May 3, 1999, arguably the strongest #tornado in History tore through communities like Bridge Creek, Moore, and south OKC. Here was our chase of this infamous #tornado as 18 year old freshman at OU. Still to this day, this is the most powerful and structurally textbook tornadic supercell I have ever chased. It was a lesson in tornado / supercell structure and in the dark side these tornadoes leave behind that is the damage and loss of life/property. Hopefully, we never see an event like this ever again

Check this out! 👀 Gravity waves can be seen on this satellite loop moving through southeast Canada and the Northeast US, emanating from an MCS in the Midwest. Like a rock dropped into water, strong vertical motions within the storm complex generate ripples in the atmosphere.

Two years ago today, I intercepted the Tornado of the Century, also known for being the westernmost violent tornado ever documented, which occurred near the town of Didsbury, Alberta. The tornado destroyed two farmsteads while tossing a combine, resulting in a rating of EF4 damage. I have no doubt in my mind after crossing the road and destroying the homes, this tornado was producing EF5 capable winds. Happy Canada Day.
