Hobbiton was already taking shape nine months before the cameras arrived. Beginning in March 1999, the production planted gardens, hedges and crops across the Matamata farm, giving everything time to grow and weather naturally. Even the New Zealand Army helped construct the 1.5 km road into the site. By the time filming began that December, Hobbiton already had the character of a village that had been there for generations. That preparation is a huge part of why the Shire still feels so authentic on screen. Happy Hobbit Day!
