Visual Story-Writing. While you write, our word processor visualizes the timeline, world map, and character relationships. Editing these visuals updates the story (e.g. drag a character on the map to move them). This summarizes our #UIST2025 paper. #HCI #LLMs #AI Thread 🧵 (1/8)

We developed an intelligent word processor that offers three automatically generated views to review the interaction and relationships between characters, their locations, and the order of the scenes. This helps review and edit the story.👇

Reviewing characters’ movements becomes a visual task. And changing a character's location in a scene is as simple as dragging them from one location to another on a map. 👇 (3/8)

Changing the order of scenes is as simple as moving them around in the timeline. 👇 (4/8)

Creating new characters or new interactions between characters is as simple as creating a new node and connecting it. 👇 (5/8)

In two user studies with inexperienced and experienced creative writers, we found that the generated visualizations supported participants in planning high-level revisions, tracking story elements, and exploring story variations in ways that encourage creativity. (6/8)

Of course, many more visualizations could help writers. That is why we propose a framework to help inform the design of visual representations that support the visual story-writing workflow. 👇 (7/8)

Our work lays the foundation for writing support, not just through words, but also visuals. 📝Paper: 🎥Video: 🖥️Code: 🕹️Demo: (8/8)

This is phenomenal and is exactly the type of UI/UX that is going to help us rethink how software should be built.

Ingenious! Can't wait to examine more closely the graph view interface to see what manipulations are possible. Before AI I was playing with building graphs through text annotations to show text and graph in sync, but your work goes much further.

Also could be a great teaching tool for porting in existing stories and having the tool show all the linkages…

Epic work. Been mapping entire story worlds not just written stories but this takes it to the next level.

Woah! Bidirectional capability for live graph viz of storytelling and then using the viz to drive the storytelling is wicked cool. I can also imagine this helping detailed deep research prompt crafting and possibly other use cases.

Love this. What I hope to see with future story builder tools - A story and it's world have physics (entities have 4 dimensions and the world has physics, that can be entirely customisable). I want the AI to validate the story's physics to ensure plot loop holes can't exist.

Was about to comment a link to Propp (one of the Russian formalists) but then saw your paper was already narratology-pilled — love this!! have been wondering — can we create similar formal “units” for argumentative writing?

This would be helpful for depicting a timeline of people and events at a trial moving from verbal testimony to graphic based depictions of the whole event and evidence

This is exactly the type of AI solutions I’ve been waiting for the past few years. Feels like so much more is possible with the current SOTA. Can’t wait for similar tools for education and self improvement

Brilliant way to bring stories alive as you go. Mapping characters and events visually will definitely change how drafts evolve. Might just tempt non-writers to give narrative a shot.
