The Rubens tube, also known as a standing wave flame tube, is a physics apparatus that visually illustrates the connection between sound waves and sound pressure

Truly wow

Incredible Rubens’ tube demo! Sound pressure turning gas into a visual symphony—mind-blowing physics.

wow

Oh now that's just sublime.

Wow Perfectly explained

This is one of the coolest physics demos ever. Sound pressure changes reshape the flame, turning invisible waves into visible motion. It’s basically audio made physical — and it also shows why resonance, frequency, and amplitude aren’t just textbook words.

Flames rising and falling with every beat. That's sound pressure compressing the gas stream, turning audio into a visual spectrum. Heinrich Rubens built the first tube in 1904 to demo wave propagation. Still the best way to see acoustics without a scope.

An animation showing how we hear sounds:

That’s cool. Seeing sound turn into moving flames makes physics feel real.

It's so amazing

Fire nation 🔥

That incredible display is a Rubens' Tube. Sound waves create standing waves of pressure inside a pipe, making flames dance higher at pressure nodes.

This is just one thing they happened to be working on when they started filming. Other tubes and stuff in the background.

Pure value in every word

Flames dancing to physics—pure magic

Sound becoming visible... science as performance art. ♾️
