POLICE SEIZE OVER 18 000 COUNTERFEIT ITEMS WORTH R15.5 MILLION DURING AN INTEGRATED TAKEDOWN OPERATION IN THE JOHANNESBURG CBD SA Police Service 🇿🇦 This week the National Counterfeit Goods Unit in collaboration with its crime fighting partners seized counterfeit goods worth R15.5 million during an integrated takedown operation in the Johannesburg CBD, which targeted a shopping mall on the corner of Rahima Moosa and Von Wielligh Streets. On Friday, 21 June 2024 police in collaboration with members of Gauteng Traffic, officials from the South African Revenue Services (SARS), Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), Brand Protectors, Crime Prevention Wardens and private security companies executed a search and seizure warrant in terms of the Customs and Excise Act 91 of 1964. Intelligence also led the team to hidden storage facilities at the mall whereby special equipment was utilised to gain entry. The operation resulted in the seizure of over 18 000 counterfeit items seized that included shoes, sports apparel, handbags, caps and perfumes. In addition, the team seized counterfeit goods worth R6.6 million on 13 June 2024 and also seized counterfeit goods worth R5.8 million on 07 June 2024 during similar takedown operations in the Johannesburg CBD. This brings the total value of counterfeit goods seized for the past three weeks to nearly R28 million. #CrimeWatch

UPDATE: COUNTERFEIT GOODS WORTH MORE THAN R100 MILLION SEIZED AT BELLVILLE SHOPPING COMPLEX WITHIN A WEEK The South African Police Service's (SAPS) National and Western Cape Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Units, supported by various internal and external stakeholders, seized counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R10 million during a multidisciplinary operation at a shopping complex in Bellville. More than 40 shops were targeted during the operation on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, resulting in the seizure of high-end counterfeit branded clothing, shoes, bags, watches, sunglasses, caps and branded packaging. The multidisciplinary team comprised members from SAPS, the Cape Town Metropolitan Police Department, City of Cape Town Law Enforcement and brand protectors. This follows a similar takedown operation conducted at the same shopping complex a week ago, during which counterfeit goods valued at more than R98 million were seized. Combined, the two operations resulted in the seizure of counterfeit goods worth more than R100 million within a week. These operations form part of nationwide efforts to dismantle the trade in counterfeit and illicit goods, which threaten public safety, legitimate businesses and the country's economy.

The discovery was made during a well-coordinated sting operation on 6 October 2025. The recovered exhibits included finished counterfeit honey, chemical substances used in the production process, a heating coil, and a gas cylinder.
