NO. Same sex marriage is not an ‘urban elitist’ concept. It’s a human need. Maybe some sarkari elites drafted it who have never travelled in small towns & villages. Or Mumbai locals. First, same sex marriage is not a concept. It’s a need. It’s a right. And in a progressive, liberal & inclusive civilisation like Bharat, same sex marriage should be normal, not a crime.

You’re wrong sir. Read again, center is talking about “marriage” of same-sex couples not relationship between them. Secondly if you see how Indian marriages are conducted, it’s rituals of sindur daan, kanya daan, vivah pheras and vachan etc are designed specifically for men and women and will not fit same-sex couples. If they try, it will only make a mockery of these rituals. The best thing they can do is to create their own rituals and live in domestic partnership which indian government has no problem in granting. Thirdly, they cry about property transfer when the spouse passes away which can be solved quite easily if they simply make a will. Fourthly, and most importantly 99% of the same sex couples do not practice monogamy anyways so why this outrage I don’t understand?

True I guess special marriage can be modified to incorporate it, I thought they wanted to modify hindu marriage act. So there was some confusion there I apologize. But either way it’s not so simple as this will have a ripple effect and many other laws like adoption laws etc will have to be modified and policies that are gender specific like for wives and widows etc will have to be changed. So just like marriage rituals the community has to come up with a legal marriage structure like who will get whose surname, and whose surname will their kids get and how will domestic violence cases work because currently they’re designed to favor women. Then who gets the kids after divorce coz currently the mom gets preference. So ya it will change the entire fabric of social structures and is not just a matter of a simple change that many are claiming. I feel most people will welcome this change as long as it’s defined properly and goes through a proper discussion channel. However one must also ask if this change is really needed when even straight couples are choosing to avoid getting married and society is slowly moving away from marriage.

@vivekagnihotri Well said Either the Hindu marriage is treated on par with Muslim & Christian marriages, thereby independent of Govt edict Or LGBT, make new rituals & mantras that are specific to gay, lesbian, etc. The issue is that this is an unfair political attack on Hinduism via courts
