I’ve actually seen this from the other side- step dad raised kid from 3-15 then split with partner after they had two kids together. Broke the oldest boys heart when he refused to have anything to do with the kid he’d raised as his own and given his name to for 12 years- so I’m on the kids side here. Was actually on dad’s side at the start until I learned that they were his step kids that he’d actually raised for years. I’m not saying he’s fully responsible for them, but if was their dad for a time then surely talking with the mum and coming to some agreement about taking them (she pays for half or goes with them too) would be an alternative. Kids shouldn’t be punished for relationships breaking down because it’s not their fault.

Call me selfish, but I am on dad’s side. I am a mother that actually has children from two different fathers. I do not expect my younger children’s father to take care of the older ones regardless of how long he helped when we were/are together. That is their father’s job.
