For one beautiful second, he thought they had come for him. He jumped to his feet. His tail started wagging. He pressed his little face against the kennel door and watched the family walk closer. Then they stopped at the kennel next to his. He watched them lift another puppy into their arms. He watched them smile. He watched them leave. And still, he kept wagging. Only after the door closed did his tail slowly fall still. He sat there staring at the empty hallway, waiting for the footsteps to come back. When they didn’t, he curled up beside the gate and fell asleep facing the door. He wasn’t jealous. He just wanted to know what it felt like to be chosen. Somewhere, there is a family who could change his whole world simply by stopping at his kennel.
