In 2022, Gavin Newsom broke ground on the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, a project featuring an overpass for animals across a Southern California freeway. Artificial ‘corridors’ will be built for them, as the construction [of the toll road] can’t be stopped. “But the government has pledged to protect wildlife and restore degraded ecosystems,” said a local community representative in despair.
