Remembering the great American actor, Sterling Hayden, on his 110th birthday! In André De Toth's 'Crime Wave' (1953), Sterling Hayden's character- Sims has the habit of chewing on toothpicks and at one point explains that he does this because although he loves cigarettes, his doctor says he can't have them. In real life, Sterling Hayden, actually had a pack-a-day smoking habit, but André De Toth wouldn't allow him to smoke on screen in order to get an extra level grumpiness and hostility from Hayden's performance.

It’s the little things that make a difference. 👑 The anticipation of a new sibling can bring a whole range of emotions for toddlers, ranging from excitement to apprehension. Which is why I was so touched by this tender video, depicting not only a first meeting between this little guy and his new sibling, but a collective effort to support big brother. From his “big brother” sweatshirt to his hospital-issued crown, it’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into making this day a special one for our hero. And it’s working. Look at how something as simple as a paper crown influences his spirit. On a day that might otherwise have been stressful, he enters with such pride and wonder. Don’t think he’s proud of that crown? When grandma asks, “what’cha got?!” (meaning the new baby), his first instinct is to show off his hat. Well done all around, grownups. In an era when “calling the police” on kids simply playing can divide a community, escalate a situation, or even put lives at risk, here is to those who find another way. Who turn conflict into connection. A complaint into community. A tense moment into an opportunity for joy. And here is to Shaq. I had the honor of working with him on many projects in Newark. What always stood out to me wasn’t his celebrity or even his larger-than-life presence. It was his humanity. For someone who commands so much attention, he has a remarkable gift for giving it to others. For making people, especially young people, feel special, worthy, capable, and seen. There is grace in that. A noise complaint brought the police. The police brought Shaq. And what could have become a moment of division became basketball, laughter, connection, and community. May we find more ways to turn conflict into connection. May we see more of this. May we be more of this. op: @theactsofhumanity
