On this day in 1918, the Armistice agreement was signed, marking the end of World War I hostilities between the Allies and Germany. Signed on November 11, 1918, in a railway carriage in Compiègne, France, the armistice officially took effect at the symbolic hour of the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. This agreement was negotiated after Germany's deteriorating military and economic situation forced it to seek peace. The armistice paved the way for the Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919, which formally ended the war. This historic footage captures the celebrations in Paris in 1918. Armistice Day was first observed to honor those who had served and sacrificed in World War I. However, over time, with subsequent conflicts, Armistice Day evolved to recognize all military service members, not just those from World War I. In 1954, following World War II and the Korean War, the United States officially renamed Armistice Day to Veterans Day, establishing it as a national holiday to honor all U.S. veterans for their service and dedication.

A Japanese kamikaze pilot survives an attack on a U.S. ship and is rescued afterward, 1945. In October 1944, with Japan facing imminent defeat in World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy created the Kamikaze (“Divine Wind”) special attack units. Pilots in these units carried out missions by deliberately crashing bomb-laden planes into Allied warships. Often depicted as fanatical, most Kamikaze pilots were young volunteers, averaging 21 years old, motivated by a mix of nationalism, duty, and intense societal pressure. While only about 19% of missions struck their targets, they managed to sink 34 ships and kill over 7,000 Allied personnel. By the end of the war, roughly 3,800 Japanese pilots had given their lives in these desperate, last-ditch attacks.
