The group is demanding the recusal of Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker from the Da’Quain Johnson case, which was already closed. They have threatened to protest the AG’s office in Lansing next.

One group present (with rifles) was the Revolutionary Black Panther Party. “I said it from the jump: We’re going to be peaceful until we can’t be peaceful anymore,” attendee Angelica Johnson [Da’Quain’s mother] said. “And I still stick with that.”

On Wednesday night, February 18, 2026, around 9:30 p.m., Grand Rapids police chased 32-year-old Da’Quain Johnson on his bike, cornered him in the parking lot of his own southeast Grand Rapids apartment complex, unleashed a K‑9 on him, and then shot him about 3 or 4 times while he was on the ground. Police now say they recovered a handgun at the scene and that state investigators are reviewing the shooting while the officer is on leave. Da’Quain Johnson was a son, a neighbor, and a member of his community, not a threat to be torn apart and gunned down where he lived. It is 2026, and Black men are still being met with dogs and bullets instead of protection, still dying in encounters that are supposed to be about “public safety.” His family deserves full transparency, full accountability, and justice for Da’Quain Johnson. My deepest condolences go out to his mother, his loved ones, and everyone greatly affected by this tragic loss.

Breaking news - Norfolk Police say they have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after they shot and killed a man in Thetford, after reports of a two-vehicle collision. One man, believed to be the driver of one of the vehicles, left the scene holding what was described as a handgun. They said Armed response officers attended, and the suspect was then shot by officers from a short distance away.

Johnson resisted on the ground and produced a firearm. Officers shot and Johnson passed away Thursday in the hospital. Upon release, there has been community outrage. "I saw somebody laying on their stomach with a dog on their back and two police officers behind them, and then I watched them shoot my son four times," Johnson’s mother said.
