The finale of tonight: The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem This sacred church in the Old City of Jerusalem is believed to be built on the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. This was built in 335 AD by Emperor Constantine. It was later destroyed in 1009 and rebuilt by Crusaders in the 11th century.

Caras Galadhon, the heart of Lothlórien and the home of Galadriel and Celeborn. This golden city was where the Fellowship stayed after entering Lothlórien. Built high among the enormous mallorn trees, the city was unlike almost anywhere else in Middle-earth. Its name roughly means “City of Trees” in Sindarin, and it was surrounded by a high green wall and a deep moat. Interestingly, an extended scene introducing the city was included in the Extended Edition of The Fellowship of the Ring. Haldir leads the Fellowship to a hilltop, where they get their first view of Caras Galadhon. He then says, “Caras Galadhon. The heart of Elvendom on earth.” The scene was ultimately cut from the theatrical version.

Tragically, my sweet, courageous cousin Rose was murdered this morning by a 16 year old palestinian kid. She was murdered standing guard as a Defender of the Jewish People, and a defender of the guards of our ancient old city of Jerusalem. She was 20 years old. I took this video on Friday, and little did I know it would be my last time seeing her. We don’t share the Muslim world’s luxury of viewing history through the myopic lens of the past few centuries. 1000 years before Islam was founded, just like Rose, countless defenders of our holy city were slain as we watched the destruction of our first temple; and 500 years later, countless defenders of our holy city were again slain as we witnessed the destruction of our second temple. We’ve been yearning to return to our homeland since centuries before Hadrian coined the word “Palestine.” History will remember Rose for the infectiously sweet, deceptively dangerous, honorable Warrior of the Jewish People that she was, much like her ancient ancestors. May Rose’s memory be a blessing. רות אלישבע בת חיים דוד
