WAS COREY RUIZ EXECUTED? Corey Durell Ruiz, 38, described by community accounts as a father, was fatally shot by a Madison police officer during a daytime arrest struggle at Williamson and South Baldwin Streets on July 22. Madison police say officers were responding to reports of someone stealing bicycles... and checking vehicle doors. Ruiz allegedly rode away on a bicycle before officers encountered him again around 1:34 p.m. Police say he was pulled or fell from the bike, produced a fixed-blade knife and injured an officer during the struggle. Bystander footage shows four officers surrounding Ruiz in the intersection. An officer can be heard warning “Taser” before the device was deployed. Moments later, one officer fired three shots at close range. Police say the Taser was ineffective and that the officer who fired was the same veteran officer allegedly injured by the knife. Ruiz was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. Some witnesses say they did not see Ruiz holding a weapon during the portion of the confrontation they observed. Social-media accounts also allege that the three shots struck Ruiz in the head, but the location of his wounds has not been officially confirmed through an autopsy report or investigative findings. Activist accounts are identifying Officer Kiel Baitinger-Peterson as the shooter. City of Madison records confirm that an MPD officer with that name was appointed to the department, but Madison police and Wisconsin DOJ have not officially identified the officer who fired. Authorities have only described him as a veteran officer. Madison did not have department-wide body-worn cameras deployed to patrol officers at the time, meaning there is no conventional officer bodycam angle available. Police say additional video that has not circulated publicly is being reviewed. All four involved officers were placed on administrative leave. A teen who was assaulted and slammed by a Warren police officer during booking has filed a $50 million lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed this week by Fieger Law. Matthew Rodriguez, 48, an officer with 14 years on the force, was charged Friday with assault and battery charges. Warren police announced Monday that he had been fired According to the lawsuit, the teen suffered physical and mental damage due to excessive force, and the city of Warren failed to properly train the officer. "Officer Matthew, with the specific intent to intimidate and/or harass Plaintiff, as a result of his race and/or ethnicity, caused physical contact with Plaintiff by striking him in the head and/or face with a fist and pulling him off the ground by his hair," the lawsuit reads. The lawsuit also says that the two other officers in the video failed to intervene and help the teen. “This is one of the most flagrant cases of police misconduct I’ve seen in my entire career as a trial attorney. The sheer violence and disregard for human life that these three officers showed is despicable and cannot be tolerated," said James Harrington of Fieger Law. The incident happened early this week at the Warren police department. The video shows the officer punching and grabbing the 19-year-old by his locs before slamming & launching him into his cell. Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer says an investigation was launched after the two officers in the video stepped up and told a supervisor about the incident. One officer was telling Rodriguez "That's enough" multiple times in an attempt to make the officer stop, Dwyer said. At first, they did not know why the officer was attacking him. On May 16, 2026, at approximately 4:15 a.m., FWPD East Division officers were on scene working a previous officer involved shooting near the 4200 block of Wiman Drive. While still investigating the shooting, a white SUV drove by multiple times at a high rate of speed. It appeared the driver was attempting to hit officers standing near their vehicles. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver failed to stop. Officers pursued the SUV for approximately 15 minutes and eventually stopped the vehicle with a tactical vehicle intervention, also known as a PIT maneuver. Officers then approached the vehicle with their guns drawn and gave multiple verbal commands. The adult male subject did not comply with the officers’ orders and grabbed an officer’s handgun. At that point, multiple officers fired their guns and struck the suspect. Medical aid was provided by officers until the Fort Worth Fire Department arrived on scene. The male was pronounced deceased on scene. A Fort Worth Police Officer was injured during this incident and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. It is unknown at this point how the officer was injured. The officer is listed in good condition. Detectives from the Major Case unit were called to the scene and are continuing the investigation. An officer with the Baltimore Police Department used his firearm in a shooting that occurred on the 1700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in the Upton neighborhood of the city on Thursday, according to the department. Shortly after noon, CCTV alerted officers to a fight near Wilson and Penn avenues, where three men were sparring. Responding officers were warned that one of the individuals was armed with a knife. Officers pursued the suspect after he refused to stop. A struggle ensued as an officer tried to arrest the suspect, who resisted while clinging to a satchel on his person. According to Fairfield police, a school resource officer responded to a "physical altercation involving multiple students on campus" just after 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Police say a high school student was fighting a school official who was trying to break up the fight. According to Fairfield police, the officer then saw another student trying to retrieve an item from a backpack during the fight - which the officer believed was a weapon. The officer then confiscated two backpacks. Police say the officer then escorted one of the students involved in the fight to a campus office. They say a large group followed the pair, including other students "who were actively trying to fight the student the officer had detained." After the student had been taken to the office, police say the officer tried to approach a second student who was trying to fight. The student refused to listen, according to police, and went back to a large group, where more students were fighting. The officer then tried to detain the second student, police said, but they tried to pull away. At this point, other police officers had arrived at the school to help with the response. Police say the student then hit the officer, which prompted the officer to perform what they called a "takedown technique" and place the student on the ground. As the officer tried to place the student in handcuffs, the student resisted, police said. In the press release shared Thursday, police detailed what happened before the officer placed the student in handcuffs. "The second student placed his hands over his head and covered his face. An officer grabbed his wrist and tried to place his hand behind his back. The second student tensed his arms, and the officer was unable to overcome his resistance," Fairfield police said. "The officer administered a distraction strike to the second student's hands. The officer tried again to pull his arm behind his back but was still not able to overcome his resistance." After additional "distraction strikes," police arrested the student. As police worked to arrest the second student, they say the first student, who had initially been taken to the office, ran out of the school office to where the officer and the other student were. The first student was later arrested. Police said they found sharp objects, including a screwdriver, in the two backpacks they confiscated. In a letter sent to the campus community, Fairfield High School officials acknowledged what occurred on the campus on Wednesday. "At the end of lunch today at Fairfield High, there was a fight amongst multiple students.A Fairfield Police officer was working at the school, and called for additional officers to respond. We are also aware there are videos circulating on social media of the incident," the school said in a statement. The police have not publicly identified the officer involved. They said she is not on leave and that they are investigating the incident.
