The Bible never gives Mary's age. The "12 to 14" number comes from a book written 150 years later, the Protevangelium of James, and that same book says she was 16 when she conceived and that Joseph took her in as a ward and never touched her. So the only ancient source that gives an age also says there was no sex. Aisha's case is the reverse. Bukhari says Muhammad married her at 6 and consummated at 9, in his fifties. Jewish custom in Mary's day was betrothal in the early teens and the wedding a year or more later once the girl was grown, and the rabbis rebuked fathers who did it sooner. Roman census records from that era show most women marrying in their late teens, almost none before 15. Mary was a young woman by the standard of her time. Aisha was a child by the standard of hers.
