I think this was a very reasonable response. He never pointed the gun at the thief and allowed them to leave unhindered. What would be the problem here. If someone is stealing something from you, you can't assume they are not armed.

Was only 5 or 6 when a perp broke into a family car. After the emergency room extracted rock salt from his rear end for an hour from a shotgun blast with a “loaded” shell, he went straight. Can still hear the screaming “it burns” over a half century later.
