Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Sec. Vince Dizon vented his anger at DPWH engineers who took over the Sunog Apog Pumping Station in Manila on Wednesday, September 24. The project, funded in 2017 for ₱774 million, constructed in 2018, and inaugurated in 2020, has not been fully operational since then. The pumping station received an additional ₱94 million budget this year to make it operational, but DPWH engineers said ₱200 million more is needed to ensure it becomes fully functional. The DPWH Secretary has ordered a halt to its rehabilitation pending a full assessment of the project. Barangay officials said they never needed the pumping station in the first place, claiming they were not consulted before construction began. GHOST FLOOD CONTROL PROJECTS IN BULACAN CONFIRMED—DPWH SECRETARY BONOAN ADMITS WATCH: DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan admitted during the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing that there are ghost flood control projects in Bulacan, after being pressed by Sen. Jinggoy Estrada. When asked if he was aware of ghost projects in the province, Bonoan said he only learned about them this year through reports from the agency, which are now being validated. He mentioned that many projects were supposedly implemented in 2021 and 2022. Sen. Estrada named affected areas including Calumpit, Malolos, and Hagonoy, prompting Bonoan to confirm that information was received. It was revealed that Wao Wao Builders, owned by Mark Allan Arevalo, was the contractor. Zaldy Co to the Senate inquiry into the flood control scandal. Citing inter-parliamentary courtesy between the Senate and the House of Representatives, Lacson said it may not be proper to summon Co, but said the embattled lawmaker may voluntarily testify after he was accused by three former DPWH Bulacan engineers of receiving kickbacks from flood control projects.

This pistachio tree (Pistacia atlantica) is reputed to be the oldest tree in Cyprus at about 1,500 years of age, and was recognised as such in 2004 by being given protected status by the Cyprus Department of Forests. However, it is under threat from an adjacent road construction project, with no obvious protection from excavation harm.
