For India to do well, people must know how to manage their money—not just in metros but in smaller towns and villages. One way to ensure people in smaller towns learn a little about money is to teach people there. People naturally share knowledge given the closer bonds there, especially among women. So Karthik Rangappa 🇮🇳, through our education initiative, Varsity ran a two-day workshop in a small town called Chikkodi near the Karnataka-Mahrashtra border in association with Pankh India and Svatah. The two-day workshop aimed to create a safe space for women to discuss their specific financial issues and enable them to take charge of their finances. Their goals were simple: saving for children’s education, weddings, and their future. They left the workshop with a glimmer of hope in their eyes and a sense of confidence that they could now make better financial decisions. We intend to turn our learning and everything we used for training into a playbook that others can replicate elsewhere, either on their own or by collaborating with us. F off.” We’re not going to let people in these other states—people who are under attack and trying to do the right thing for their constituents—go without support or a haven. And good for this idea of being creative—finding ways to help cover the financial and potential legal exposure—by all of the organizations and the people raising the money and making sure we’re staying on top of the litigation.

Today, in the House of Assembly, I gave notice of a motion urging the Minister of Finance and Economic Promotion to take immediate action to end the exploitative practice by banks and mobile money operators of charging customers for simply checking their account balances. This unjust fee disproportionately affects low-income earners and vulnerable communities, many of whom rely on these platforms for basic financial services. At a time when we are striving to promote financial inclusion and expand access to digital banking, such practices only serve to deepen the inequality gap. I firmly believe that accessing one’s own financial information should be a right—not a privilege subject to fees. This is a bipartisan motion, and I believe it is one that members from all parties can and should support in the interest of fairness, justice, and economic empowerment.

Interesting Books Reviewed on Smedley Butler's War is a Racket and eating your own vomit: "The tragic thing is that many people who follow along and have read a lot of similar material will, in spite of all this knowledge, still say, "Yeah, but we have to go fight this war in Iran." What is the point of all this knowledge if you're just going to turn right back around and eat your own vomit? To use a biblical analogy, it’s the dog that returns to its vomit. Once you've seen all of this for what it actually is, how can you possibly go back to that mindset?"

I am so tired of this gossip, constant arguments, divisions, dramas... everyone is trying to prove that they have a monopoly on knowledge and opinion. Everyone is trying to throw mud at others. And our enemy is only happy about it. Do you know what is truly important now? Children who continue to die under the blows of russian missiles and bombs! Do you know what else is important? Our defenders, who continue to fight russian terror and aggression at the cost of their blood and lives, but increasingly see betrayal... when they give their lives for their land, their people. For the freedom of Ukraine and Europe from the russian plague. But they see how political hypocrites play with their lives. All this is much more important than all these dramas on social networks, fatigue and everything else. All these problems pale in comparison to the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Who just want to live peacefully on their land, raise their children... and see a future for themselves. Human lives are the most important thing in this world. But why do people act as if there is something more valuable?

40% of Americans own nothing in a retirement account. Think about the pressure that creates. We have a financially illiterate population and we don’t teach financial literacy in school. If you’re financially literate, I urge you not to look down on those people. Figure out how to educate them. More financially literate people means more self-sustaining people seeking their own aspirations. The Trump Accounts are a step in the right direction, but here’s what I’d say is more important than a thousand dollars in a savings account. Good food in the schools, sustainable education, and basic healthcare for kids. A child who goes to school hungry can’t think and can’t become the financially literate adult we’re hoping for. Deal with the world the way it is, not the way it should be. And right now, any step toward financial inclusion is a good one.

As a $HOOD shareholder...man. This is so, so bullish. The design of these Trump accounts were developed by Robinhood. The sleek feel and easy UI to interact with is all Robinhood. The accounts themselves on HOOD's platform will compound their AUM growth but more importantly, the fact that the US gov chose Robinhood to play such a big role here...this is not your average financial institution. They are on the cutting edge of everything happening in financial markets on a global scale and the fact that their brand is so intimately tied with America's youth getting a piece of the stock market at birth is just incredible...Vlad is on a mission. Me: I discuss in the book—it refers to the state where I know something, you know something, I know that you know it, you know that I know it, I know that you know that I know it, and so on ad infinitum. So it differs a bit from the conventional usage, which just refers to something that everyone knows. Here, everyone has to know that everyone knows. Times Radio Interviewer (Daniel Finkelstein Daniel Finkelstein): Can I use this with reference to the interview that I did yesterday with my brother? My brother’s a professor at City University; he’s president of the university, and there’s a campaign at the moment going on against one of their professors who was in the Israeli Defense Forces in the 1980s. We were having a discussion about how the university was standing up for the free speech of its staff, and I’d begun to wonder, as I went home reading your book on the tube, whether I’d made a big mistake—because the protest against this professor is really just a coordination exercise, isn’t it? And maybe I’d aided it by talking about it. Me: Oh yes—protests are coordination exercises. They’re designed to make private knowledge common knowledge. So, in a repressive regime, everyone may know that they despise the government, but because criticism of the government is punished, people might keep their opinions to themselves, with a result that they really don’t know what their fellow citizens think. Each one might think that they’re the only ones that are disgruntled, and so they can’t fear standing up to—they fear standing up to oppose the regime, because they can be picked off one at a time. If everyone were to protest at once, no government has the firepower to intimidate all its citizens at once. In a public protest, people can see other people there, and they know that the people there see other people there, and that can give them the strength and numbers to oppose the regime—sometimes by literally storming the palace, or sometimes just bringing the machinery of the state to a halt through work stoppages. But the crucial thing is that they are coordinated. They can only be coordinated if everyone knows that everyone knows that they hate the regime. Daniel Finkelstein: I suppose that social media is making people—is increasing the stock of common knowledge. We’re all much more aware of what other people like us, in particular like us, know, and we also know that other people know it, and so on, as you put it, and that makes people have more common knowledge. It’s not making us happier though; maybe we’d be better with less common knowledge? Me: Social media are making us more connected within certain circles—that is, those who are receiving the same texts and feeds that we are. It reduces the pool of, or shrinks the largest pool of common knowledge, namely the whole country, which may have been accessible in a day in which, say, in the United States there were three networks, or in Britain everyone was listening to the BBC. And yes, it probably doesn’t make us as happy, because when everything is public, it means that your reputation is on the line for anything you say or do. It means that since social media allow us to generate common knowledge, not just receive it like in the old days, it means that attacks on people’s reputation can be common knowledge, which means that it’s all the more painful for people on the receiving end of the attack. My brother’s a professor at City University; he’s president of the university, and there’s a campaign at the moment going on against one of their professors who was in the Israeli Defense Forces in the 1980s. Each one might think that they’re the only ones that are disgruntled, and so they can’t fear standing up to—they fear standing up to oppose the regime, because they can be picked off one at a time. If everyone were to protest at once, no government has the firepower to intimidate all its citizens at once. In a public protest, people can see other people there, and they know that the people there see other people there, and that can give them the strength and numbers to oppose the regime—sometimes by literally storming the palace, or sometimes just bringing the machinery of the state to a halt through work stoppages. But the crucial thing is that they are coordinated. They can only be coordinated if everyone knows that everyone knows that they hate the regime. Daniel Finkelstein: I suppose that social media is making people—is increasing the stock of common knowledge. We’re all much more aware of what other people like us, in particular like us, know, and we also know that other people know it, and so on, as you put it, and that makes people have more common knowledge. It’s not making us happier though; maybe we’d be better with less common knowledge? Me: Social media are making us more connected within certain circles—that is, those who are receiving the same texts and feeds that we are. It reduces the pool of, or shrinks the largest pool of common knowledge, namely the whole country, which may have been accessible in a day in which, say, in the United States there were three networks, or in Britain everyone was listening to the BBC. And yes, it probably doesn’t make us as happy, because when everything is public, it means that your reputation is on the line for anything you say or do. It means that since social media allow us to generate common knowledge, not just receive it like in the old days, it means that attacks on people’s reputation can be common knowledge, which means that it’s all the more painful for people on the receiving end of the attack.
