A new poll found 47 percent of 18 - 21 year-olds and 50 percent of the broader British public support reinstating the death penalty. In 2025, 70 percent supported the death penalty for murderers and terrorists. 56 percent support it for rapists. Only Rupert Lowe and Lee Anderson have proposed bringing it back. No Labour MPs and few Conservative MPs support it. Parliament haven't proposed a vote on the death penalty since 1994. Reintroduction is blocked via Protocol 6 and Protocol 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights, enshrined into British law by Tony Blair's Human Rights Act (1998). Most people feel our national moral ledger is imbalanced when criminals can inflict atrocities on our families, don't suffer punishments of comparable severity, and grieving families are taxed to pay for their tormentors' food and shelter for the duration of their sentence. This week we have been in Brussels at the European Parliament meeting with MEPs from across the political spectrum as well as with civil society organisations. We've had some very valuable exchanges about the importance of women's sex based rights, child safeguarding and freedom of expression. It was clear from many conversations we had that MEPs are accustomed to discussions about these issues being polarised and they were surprised to hear a critique of the erosion of sex based rights that comes from people with a background in progressive politics, lesbian and gay rights activism and feminism. We hope we gave them food for thought. Our aim is to move these debates beyond knee-jerk polarised positions and bring scrutiny to proposals like self-ID, conversion therapy bans which include gender identity and the expansion of hate speech regulations.

"So I ask them, why is it that the US applies this to us but not in Gaza?" Sri Lanka President has questioned why there appears to be double standards by sections of the international community in regard the application of the laws governing human rights. President pointed out that the West, including the USA, had passed resolutions against SL for its human rights record. He questioned why there was a difference in the approach taken by these nations towards Sri Lanka and Gaza, where similar issues were prevalent. He stressed that the same rules should apply to both regions.

I do not know why, until now, Saudi ambassadors have not been expelled from all countries that respect human rights, its membership in the United Nations has been withdrawn, and it has been classified as an extremist, terrorist regime that violates human rights and only uses and understands the language of violence against women and their rights.
