#WATCH | Delhi | On trade negotiations between the US and India, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor says, "It is a challenging negotiation. We are negotiating with many countries. The US is not the only negotiation. We have ongoing negotiations with the EU, we already concluded a deal with the UK, and we are talking with other countries also. If we can't compete in America, we may have to diversify our markets outside of America. We are not out of options. If America is completely unreasonable with its demands, we have to move elsewhere. That is the strength of India; we are not a totally export-dependent economy like China. We have a good and strong domestic market. We must give strong support to our negotiators to find the best deal possible. If a good deal is not possible, we may have to walk away..."

#WATCH | On US President Trump imposing an additional 25% tariff on India over Russian oil purchases, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor says, "I don't think that's particularly good news for us and that takes our total tariffs to 50 per cent then that's going to make our goods unaffordable to a lot of people in America and in particularly when you're looking at these percentages you have to compare them with the tariffs being levied on some of our competitors. I'm afraid that if you look at people like Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, even Bangladesh and Pakistan have lower tariffs than us, then ultimately people will not be buying goods from us in America if they can buy them cheaper elsewhere. So that's not very good for our exports to America. This means we need to very seriously diversify to other countries and other markets that may be interested in what we have to offer. We now have an FTA with the UK. We are talking to the EU. There are many countries in which hopefully we would be able to, but in the short term, it is definitely a blow...

#WATCH | Mumbai: On India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal says, "As I've often mentioned to you, we have closed the negotiations on the India-US free trade agreement. It'll be first tranche of a bilateral trade agreement, which will reflect an initial set of proposals that have been agreed upon by the two countries. We have to fine-tune a little bit, which process is going on. The critical aspect is that any trade agreement has to provide preferential access in order for it to be attractive. Given the uncertainties on tariffs in the United States, we are waiting for the US to provide the necessary framework under which India will get a preferential tariff for our exports to the US. It should be lower than all our competitor countries...We are in agreement on this issue and are in continuous dialogue. I had a conversation with my counterpart very recently, and we are both committed to concluding a very fair, equitable, and balanced first tranche of the US-India bilateral trade agreement. We never negotiate with a deadline until we get the best deal for our farmers, fishermen, MSMEs, startups, women entrepreneurs, for our youth..."

The country is still suffering from those 10 years of mismanagement of the economy..."

That is because we trust India. When the United States needs medicine, 40 % of our generics today come from India. Why is that? Because we trust India. Earlier this morning, I was in Delhi meeting with your Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal, and with our Trade Representative. One of my first goals getting here was finalizing a trade deal and we're very close to getting that finalized... Along with that trust, we have an incredible relationship between our president and our prime minister. I bring everyone here very warm greetings from the White House and from the president. We only hope that the wish list that we have submitted will be accepted by the DMK. Right now, our priority is assembly election so that we have sufficient numbers in the assembly where we can have our own member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha. They offered us 25 seats, but that is not acceptable to us. Whatever we want, we have given to them..." On TVK, he says, "It's a new party. We can't underestimate them. We have received a request from the government of Bangladesh for the supply of diesel, which is being examined...It bears mention that while diesel exports to Bangladesh have largely continued since 2017, India's refining capacity, our own requirements and diesel availability will be factored in while taking decisions. We have also received such requests from several other countries, including Sri Lanka and Maldives and these are being examined, taking into account our own energy requirements and availability that we have"
