A Congolese national and Director of African Refugee and Migrant Aid, Mr Malipo Mbalanga, has blamed the South African government for failing to document every foreign national applying for asylum in the country. Mbalanga says many undocumented immigrants currently living in South Africa are asylum seekers whose applications were rejected by Home Affairs, leaving them with no legal status and forcing them to remain in the country illegally.

Now, a new proposal from the Trump administration seeks to upend that system, by suspending the acceptance of asylum work permit applications until U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services reaches the point where it decides all asylum cases within an average of 180 days. That requirement would almost certainly amount to indefinite pause on asylum-related work permits, since the U.S. government faces a massive backlog of asylum applications. CBS News' Camilo Montoya-Galvez explains.

Once someone’s asylum claim is rejected, they’re given a move-out date and many simply walk out before enforcement ever shows up. They’re marked as “left the hotel,” and the Home Office gets a notification. That’s it. The Home Office says nearly 50,000 people with no right to stay have been removed and that enforcement arrests are at record levels. But a new National Audit Office report shows the government doesn’t even know how many have absconded or where most rejected asylum seekers are now. Hotel use has surged, with over 36,000 migrants currently living in taxpayer-funded accommodation. The asylum system cost the UK £4.9 billion last year - not including legal aid or local council support. Only 9% of rejected applicants tracked in one study were actually deported. The rest? On behalf of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, we submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission of India a short while ago. We have made two key demands. First, the election schedule should be announced only after all cases currently under adjudication are disposed of. We believe the Supreme Court and the Election Commission should set a clear deadline for completing this process, and the election process in West Bengal should begin only thereafter. We also want to draw attention to a serious anomaly in the data released by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal. On 20 January, after the claims and objections process ended, the CEO reported that about 9.64 lakh Form 6 applications and only 99,000 Form 7 applications had been received. However, the final press note issued on 28 February states that out of more than 9.5 lakh Form 6 applications, only about 1.8 lakh were accepted, meaning nearly 7.8 lakh applications for voter additions were rejected. Even more concerning is that while only 99,000 Form 7 deletion applications were reported until the last day of claims and objections, the final report says that 5,46,000 voters were deleted through Form 7 applications. This raises a serious question: where did these additional Form 7 applications come from after the deadline had already passed? Someone working for Greggs, unemployed, next week they're interviewing asylum seekers" First thing to note is that Rishi Sunak has now acknowledged that over the past 14 years of Conservative party rule, their plans mean fewer asylum seeker applications were processed i.e. they created the asylum backlog The second thing to note is that tick boxing asylum applications without reading the details and making a proper evaluation isn't processing applications, it's tick boxing so Sunak can make his statement of processing so many applications The third thing to note is that when Rishi Sunak said he would outsource sick notes away from GPs - the people who actually know whether you are suitable to be off sick or not, this tick boxing of asylum seeker applications is an example of outsourcing, which means the quality of service will be another layer of red tape that will cost more, deliver less, put more stress on the disabled, and the only winners will be the donors who secure the contract
