A few days ago, at the meeting of the Senate Committee on Local Content, I had cause to recuse myself when I got to know that it was an investigative hearing summoned to investigate allegations of diversion of $14.8m against the former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva. As I explained, I attended believing it was an interactive forum with the Executive Secretary and his team. When I discovered that the hearing was specifically summoned for that purpose, I raised objections—firstly, on the ground that there should be no selective inquiry; that the entirety of the management of the fund, perhaps from inception, should be investigated, if at all, and not just one transaction. While the committee has the powers to decide what to investigate, I feel that this approach is too selective, especially bearing in mind that it is public knowledge that the EFCC has already taken steps — meaning they have investigated and reached a certain level. I thought the Committee need not investigate that particular transaction, even though it has the powers to do so. I recused myself because the person affected is a former governor of my state — my predecessor in office, and I have a policy of not joining to fight or pull down anyone. I am not like other politicians from my area or the typical politicians in Nigeria who celebrate the downfall of opponents and people they disagree with. The person concerned and I have been on different ends, leading different tendencies in various political battles in my state since 2011 till date. While we do not meet or speak or pursue any common political agenda, and we have not been in the same party since 2011, I do not practise politics that involves pulling people down or contributing to their problems. I have always limited political contest to campaigns during elections, where I outplan, out-campaign, strategize, and defeat them on the ground and through legal processes, but never by trying to bring anyone down after elections. As part of this policy I have extended support and encouragement to all who operate at the federal level in spite of political or partisan differences, knowing that if political interests do not align until elections, we will then resolve such differences at the polls. As I have always told our people, “we are few”; everyone is important. If you cannot help someone, leave the person alone, and don't destroy them. That has been my policy, which I have practised and taught for several years. As I have always maintained, I am in politics for service to God and man — I build, I raise, I develop, I defend; I don't destroy or pull down. I know that they don’t treat me the same way. When they are in a position to bring me down, they don't spare anything to achieve that goal, but to the glory of God, they have not succeeded so far, and God is still on His throne. I know these are very trying times, particularly for the people affected, and I do not intend to add to anyone’s problems. It is God who has always fought my battles and has ensured that my opponents, despite all they do using federal power or federal might, blackmail or propaganda, incitements, in spite of all these, they have not defeated my tendency till date. Even when all the major political figures unite against me, backed by federal might and greater resources, they still lose, as my politics is achored on God and the support and prayers of men — not on violence, destruction and pulling people down or celebrating their misfortune and downfall. It is on account of this that I explained my position to my colleagues in the committee, who saw reason with me, and I left. As a former governor, I feel I have a lifelong responsibility of support and fairness to all Bayelsans; which is why I have protected, supported, and encouraged all persons from my state, from the Niger Delta region, and all Nigerians, irrespective of party, till date on all issues that have been brought before me.

#WATCH | Roorkee, Uttarakhand: At the IIT Roorkee Convocation, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval says, "I was a young IPS officer, new to the intelligence profession. I was in my 20s, and I was posted as in charge of intelligence in Sikkim. That was not a part of India at that time. It was becoming part of India. I was part of that process where the merger was taking place. But my responsibility also included looking after the border areas and collecting intelligence about the movement of the PLA, activities of the Chinese Army... So, once, we had an intelligence mission in the border area, and about eight days later, they had to return. So, five days went by, then ten days went by, then perhaps 15 days went by. For me, it was a matter of very great concern, not only professionally but also on the human side, that so many people—we don't know whether they are dead or alive, and what has happened to them. We got no reports of any avalanche or anything. It was a matter of deep worry and concern. But I got a telephone call from the headquarters, and my boss told me, "Have you sent some people across?" I said, "I do not know. They must be coming. They should have come in five or six days, but now it is about ten or eleven days." He said, "They are in Chinese custody now." They were caught by the Chinese and interrogated. Anyway, the Chinese returned them, probably after some talks or negotiations, or a deal must have been struck. So, they returned totally shattered, in shambles. And an inquiry was started. I knew that this was the end of my career. I was still in my twenties, and I had to start a new career. I saw the incident as something very unprofessional. Anyway, the inquiry was over. I wasn't found at fault. Probably, I had done everything right. The sketches and the maps that were given to us by the headquarters had some defects and mistakes in them. That is how it happened..."

#WATCH | Activist Sonam Wangchuk says, "Today, on the 26th day, I would like to share some important news with you. It's about 12:30 at night. Just a while ago, Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh came here, and the top leaders of the Apex Body of Ladakh also came here. Before that, you know, about 65 MPs from various political parties came and signed, asking us to break our fast. They assured us that they would discuss this issue in Parliament, including the NEET paper leak and the examination system. The ministers who came from the government also assured us that for the past two days, we had been very tough. What can I say, there was a kind of bargaining going on: I want assurances, and they want them in writing. This took two days, and that's why I had to sit on the fast for two more days. I could have sat on it even longer, but finally, today they have given me written assurances..." He adds, "Today they have given written assurances. Our students and youth who are peacefully protesting at Jantar Mantar or those who participated in the 'Sansad Chalo' march on July 20th, no legal action, FIRs, etc. will be taken against them... Secondly, the children who died in this paper leak accident, more than 20 in number, will be given appropriate compensation; compensation will be provided to their families. Thirdly, there will be a thorough discussion and debate in Parliament on this issue and on bringing accountability to the government in education and examinations, to ensure that this does not happen again and that there is full accountability for what has happened. Now you will definitely ask what happened to Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation. Firstly, they were unable to give me any assurance as to when this would happen... Now I had two options: either I go on a hunger strike for more weeks, and perhaps that would lead to the end of me. Then thousands of you have been telling me since 2-3 weeks ago that my life is important, and to continue the struggle, I have to stay alive... But I also don't believe that we haven't achieved this. My mind works differently. If he (Dharmendra Pradhan) doesn't do this, doesn't resign, it won't harm the children or us; it will harm the government itself. By not avoiding this small issue, he is harming himself. He should have resigned. Resignation would have stopped all this damage long ago. This wasn't the most important thing for me; it would be resolved on its own. More important to me than any other way was that our children should not be implicated in such cases... I have seen how in Ladakh, for years, FIRs have ruined kids' futures. Nothing like this will happen. We have achieved this from them; I am happy about that, and the families of the deceased children will be given proper compensation. In the highest temple of India's democracy, which is our Parliament, there will be a full debate on this issue and on accountability. I also thank you all very much for supporting this movement."
