Jay-Z & Irv Gotti’s relationship dates back to the late 80s. They first met in London while both were working with Jaz-O. Irv was one of first people in the music industry who believed in Jay’s talent. The name “Irv Gotti” was given to Irv by Jay-Z. Their friendship grew through the years and when Jay pivoted from the streets to music, Irv served as a big supporter of Jay and Roc-A-Fella Records. Irv used his talents and connections to assist Jay in a multitude of ways. Helping Jay with getting his records played on radio, serving as his tour DJ, producing records for him, and ultimately helping Jay and Roc-A-Fella secure a 50/50 joint venture distribution partnership with Def Jam Recordings.
