John Cassavetes explaining why he made the movie: "'A Woman Under the Influence' (1974) was the first picture I’ve had anything to do with that wasn’t made out of plain, simple feeling, but rather out of a real desire to do something in my profession. It was extremely frightening for me not to come to work out of enthusiasm and instead put myself up as something of a craftsman. Earlier films such as 'Shadows' (1958) and 'Husbands' (1970) grew out of personal experiences reaching all the way back to my childhood days. They were expressions of my innermost feelings, and now that I’ve dealt with all that, I feel obligated to view life in other terms. I want to explore other areas of human and artistic experience. I made 'The Ki!!ing of a Chinese Bookie' (1976) as an intellectual experiment– not because I am in love with it. I enjoy a more intellectual and less emotionally demanding view than in my previous work. If I can make, out of certain intellectual ideas, films that are complex in their nature, then I’m entering into new ground. And that is certainly something I look forward to. It is a film that has little to do with me and with how I feel about life. It’s interesting to me to see how other people live in our society, to look at them and ask myself, ‘Why do they do it? And they had whip that they beat donkeys with. It's a pain that is not normal, like being lashed with iron whip. But first they only beat me a bit. Then they woke me up at 2 a.m. and they gave me the beating of my life. They put me against the wall, one grabs my head and the other - punches, punches. I'm trying to loose consciousness and fall. But they didn't let me lose consciousness either. They held me. Then they beat me with the donkey whip and each lash is a burn, and it's scars, scars that I have till today. One beat me with the whip and two others beat me with poles and hands. OK, I thought, it's over. I was shattered, bleeding. Every bone in my body hurt. I was happy that it's over. I went to sleep. Then 6 in the morning they came with radios. Turned on Arabic music, yelling : "Allahu Akbar, what fun, what a great day!" And again the same beating - punches, whip. That's the second round. And then the third round. And then again at noon. And then they put on music and say - move your arms, dance and laugh. My bones were hurting, it hurt to move my arms. And then another beating, more hits. And I realized I entered a loop that I doubt I'll make out of it alive. They beat me with everything they had. They broke a radio on my head. And a really big stick that they broke on me. The donkey whip got all bent. It's iron. They bent the iron from how much they beat me. It really hurt. They beat the soles of my feet, maybe 40 whips. My entire leg was swollen, red and blue. And he tells me - stand up. Stand on the foot. And it felt like they are burning me. The abuse went on like they. Day after day, hour after hour. And it's only getting more severe. About 7 rounds every day, every round about 20 minutes. There was a guy, they said it's new commander, his weight was at least 100 kg. And I weighted hardly 50 kg at that point. And he was just standing on my neck. Jumping, jumping on my neck. Standing on my head, jumping on my back. And I feel that it's breaking." Howard Hawks on his meeting with Al Capone & what Capone and another famous Chicago gangster thought about 'Scarface' (1932) when they saw the film: "Interviewer: Did you have any contact with Al Capone while making the picture? Hawks: While we were making 'Scarface' (1932), five or six of them came out and said, “The boss wants us to see the picture.” And I said, “You go and tell him when it comes out, he can pay a dollar and buy a ticket. You don’t scare me. Why the hell don’t you come out and just ask to see it?” They reported to Capone that it was just great, and they invited me to Chicago to see him. They met me at the train, and they were late. One of the fellows said, “There was a killing last night and we had to go to the funeral.” I said, “Do I have to ride with you if there was a killing last night?” They said I could ride in a different car. But when we went into a café, they would sit with their backs to the wall, and I had my back to the door. We had some damn good-looking girls with us, a bit brassy but very pretty. When I saw Capone, we had tea, and he was dressed in a morning coat, striped trousers, a carnation, being a very nice man, saying how much he liked the picture. I was with him two, three hours. Then he asked me to come again, and I stopped by there. But there was a shooting in Chicago, so they said that he couldn’t come because he was hiding out in Atlantic City or something. Then he came to see me when I was working in Hollywood, and the cops came and arrested him right on the set. Interviewer: So he did see 'Scarface'? Hawks: Five or six times. He had his own print of it. He thought it was great. He’d say, “Jesus Christ, you guys got a lot of stuff in that picture! How’d you know about that?” I said, “Look—you know how somebody can’t testify if he’s a lawyer? Well, I’m a lawyer.” And he laughed. He didn’t give a damn. Another famous gangster brought two very lovely daughters out to watch the movie and introduced himself to me. He said, “Where’d you get that stuff in that killing?” I asked him, “Why? Are you mad?” He said, “No, I’m just curious.” I told him, and he laughed, and he said, “That’s the way we did the shooting. Why hasn’t the picture played in Chicago?” I said, “They won’t let me.” He said, “Do you want it to play?” I said yeah. Howard Hawks on his meeting with Al Capone & what Capone and another famous Chicago gangster thought about 'Scarface' (1932) when they saw the film: "Interviewer: Did you have any contact with Al Capone while making the picture? Hawks: While we were making 'Scarface' (1932), five or six of them came out and said, “The boss wants us to see the picture.” And I said, “You go and tell him when it comes out, he can pay a dollar and buy a ticket. You don’t scare me. Why the hell don’t you come out and just ask to see it?” They reported to Capone that it was just great, and they invited me to Chicago to see him. They met me at the train, and they were late. One of the fellows said, “There was a killing last night and we had to go to the funeral.” I said, “Do I have to ride with you if there was a killing last night?” They said I could ride in a different car. But when we went into a café, they would sit with their backs to the wall, and I had my back to the door. We had some damn good-looking girls with us, a bit brassy but very pretty. When I saw Capone, we had tea, and he was dressed in a morning coat, striped trousers, a carnation, being a very nice man, saying how much he liked the picture. I was with him two, three hours. Then he asked me to come again, and I stopped by there. But there was a shooting in Chicago, so they said that he couldn’t come because he was hiding out in Atlantic City or something. Then he came to see me when I was working in Hollywood, and the cops came and arrested him right on the set. Interviewer: So he did see 'Scarface'? Hawks: Five or six times. He had his own print of it. He thought it was great. He’d say, “Jesus Christ, you guys got a lot of stuff in that picture! How’d you know about that?” I said, “Look—you know how somebody can’t testify if he’s a lawyer? Well, I’m a lawyer.” And he laughed. He didn’t give a damn. Another famous gangster brought two very lovely daughters out to watch the movie and introduced himself to me. He said, “Where’d you get that stuff in that killing?” I asked him, “Why? Are you mad?” He said, “No, I’m just curious.” I told him, and he laughed, and he said, “That’s the way we did the shooting. Why hasn’t the picture played in Chicago?” I said, “They won’t let me.” He said, “Do you want it to play?” I said yeah. And he said, “Can I use your phone a minute?” When he finished he said, “You can play it any time you want.” ('Hawks on Hawks', Joseph McBride, 1982) P.S: On this day, 94 years ago, 'Scarface' (1932) premiered in New Orleans, Luisiana.
