On the 1st March, we said you can come in and it took them a few days to sail in and then they docked in Kochi. There were a lot of young cadets and they disembarked. So for us, when this ship wanted to come in and that too in difficulties, I think it was the humane thing to do. We were guided by that principle. My cousins and my brother and I were exploring Coney Island, we saw the sights, hung out at the arcades and before we went back to the apartment we decided to go and get something to eat, we had some money on us but not much so we decided to see what we could get at one of the vendors. This was back in the early 90’s when most of them had dollar slices of pizza wherever we went. So we got 4 pieces of pizza, should have been $4 because that’s the price we were used to. The guy wanted to charge us $24 at $6 a slice. We argues with him because one of my cousins already took a bite being so hungry. But at the least we owed $4. We gave the other slices back and refused them but had to pay for the partially eaten one, it was embarrassing that an adult would try that on a bunch of kids. We told our uncle what happened and he went back and yelled at the vendor. He was familiar with them because he used to get slices all the time from the same guy and he never charged my uncle that price. I couldn’t imagine paying that exurban amount, like this guy who was being charged $54 for a hotdog by one of the vendors. At first he thought it was a typo and it was $5.40 but the vendor. Learned it up when he said no it was $54. Would you have paid that amount? I would have walked away, clearly he was trying to possibly scam a the man for looking like a tourist. Part of the experience when visiting a new area is the street food but it’s becoming more and more a chore avoiding places like this.

Jason Sudeikis says Ted Lasso started as just a commercial for the Premier League before both NBC and Netflix passed on it, and Apple said yes “NBC Sports got the rights for the Premier League back in 2013. An ad company came to me with five ideas. One was a football coach coaches soccer. This was like May of 2013” “I was like, okay, can I bring two friends. They came over. We had the laptop open and just wrote out beats for ideas. We knew we were going to have two days. We were going to shoot it in London. It was one of those moments where I was just in a flow state” “We go over there and make the commercial. It's a multi million dollar campaign. We did not write a script. We have no script. The ad company did, but we were only using little pieces of it. I came up with the name Ted Lasso. I was just like, what about Ted Lasso. I liked the idea of a first name and a noun” “It was a little short film. It was three and a half minutes. It was just a commercial for the Premier League on NBC Sports. Here's a couple hundred grand to make this commercial. The commercial does so well with football fans, soccer fans, comedy people” “Then we enjoyed doing it so much that we were like, hey, can we do another one. They said, yes, but we don't have the budget we had last year, so we can't fly you over there. The whole premise of the commercial is Ted Lasso gets hired by Tottenham Hotspur and then gets fired three days later because he doesn't know what he's doing” “Then we did the second one. That's where the show idea came from. Ted gets hired, gets fired, but isn't mad at anybody. He falls in love with soccer, falls in love with London, and now he's living back in New York, waking up at 7 am to watch Premier League games, driving a Mini Cooper. Joe had written a spit draft of the pilot, which was about 85% of what we ended up doing. That was 2015. A jaw-on-the-floor moment for the whole team was when we had taught the robot to pick up a baggie and shake a usb-brick out with the left hand. During one rollout, it decided to do it with the right hand—and we all stopped. We were stunned, because no one taught it to do that. This was one of the first models with our pretrained base, and it was the moment we realized there was something here that was very different from what any of us had ever built before. We now know this to be part of the improvisational intelligence that emerges with large-scale pretraining on real manipulation data, and it continues to be one of the things that we believe to be worth pushing forward as capability. Our CTO and cofounder Andy Barry joined Association for Advancing Automation to share more about these moments, and how his time at Boston Dynamics and the Broad Institute drove him to focus on building the 🧠 for robots at Generalist. Carlos on his pitlane penalties: “We had contact in turn one, a big melee, three or four cars side by side. In that contact we damaged the rim of the first set of tires, which were giving massive vibrations. We lost all the sensors of the front tires, which meant we lost the possibility to engage the pit limiter, which every time I was going through the pitlane, we were having issues because the sensor was under-reading and I didn't know at which speed I was going. So every time we were in the pits we were getting a penalty, which in the end, even if we were on for points scoring position today, we just had too many issues in the car, too many issues from that turn one racing incident.”
