The United States says the African Union's presence at G20 proceedings under its presidency will ensure that African countries are well represented. Washington has reiterated its stance on snubbing South Africa, and Pretoria delegates were not invited to some of the first diplomatic engagements in December. Former diplomat and International Relations expert Dr Kingsley Makhubela says it is unfortunate that the US has taken a unilateral decision to exclude South Africa, since it is the biggest economy in Africa. They say the two were married through customary rights, and experienced problems that led to their separation.
