When we became a Republic, we made the serious mistake of turning what was a subcontinent into an island by cutting off our land routes. A Nation that had been trading through these routes for thousands of years became an island where to this day, our largest volumes of trade can happen only through sea or by air. Absolutely devastating news. The child that the media claimed died from measles actually died from medical malpractice. Dr Pierre Kory outlines two big failures the hospital had in her treatment: 1. They didn’t adjust the antibiotics after she continued to decline. 2. They delayed administration of a new antibiotics for 10 hours after they had confirmed test results. The delay was fatal. Dr Kory says the hospital did one important thing right. They were treating her for pneumonia- not just measles. Later in this conversation, they mention that the parents don’t want this to be used to spread propaganda like the media has. They want this to save any other child that comes in with the same condition.

In India, a heart attack happens 10 years before the death of a person. It is more severe. Often, if you and I go to a doctor and ask what the risk of a heart attack is, to calculate that, we have risk scores... All the risk scores that we have are either using Western risk scores, which are made up of 6 or 7 risk scores. We believed that if we apply these risk scores to the Indian population, that is, what are the chances of a heart attack in 10 years, if we apply these risk scores to the Indian population. These risk scores should not be validated for us because when these scores were made, they were made on the Western population... You have seen so many people just dropping down dead on a treadmill or running marathon or a day to day activity. If they went for a basic check like a blood test, an ECG, and a cardiac CT scan, that's all, none of those people would have had a heart attack, none of them. Because the blockage would have been diagnosed and they would have been under treatment. So the problem of healthy people the suddenly dropping down dead could have been eliminated completely if only people went for a health checkup. Our biggest problem is people refuse to see the doctors unless they have pain..."

#WATCH | Delhi: Shamika Ravi, Member, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, says, "We will remain the fastest growing economy in the world despite all global upheavals. We are all watching carefully how things are unfolding in West Asia. But also because India today, structurally is a very different country. We have a very large segment, almost 90% of urban markets, where people use LPG. In the rural market, that number is also close to 60%... I think there is sufficient planning. So there is no reason for any kind of panic, because we have had expectations. The Ukraine war has been going on now for more than four years. I think India's growth, unfortunately, in the last 10 years has been subjected to all kinds of global shocks. But despite that, I think we are managing fairly well. I heard one of Donald Trump’s main advisers on this make the argument that the market will take care of it. These companies will solve the safety issues because they have every incentive to do so. If it turns out to be dangerous, people will just sue them. And they’re worried about financial liability. That’s not how we treat airlines, or drug companies, or food companies. We now have 150 years of experience just letting the market do whatever it wants when it comes to things that deeply affect our health and our safety. And so, there’s no replacement for an effective, government regulatory structure. And the challenge we have is that obviously, we have a president currently that has said that’s for losers. So, we’ve got a gap, at least of a couple of years, where things are moving really fast, and we have an administration that is not capable of or willing to, I would argue both, of putting together a serious regulatory framework, which is why I actually think we should be encouraging some sort of voluntary industry restraint, not because it’s a replacement, but because that may be the best we can do for now until we can get Congress and the White House to start getting serious about this."
