WATCH | State-owned digital and technology distributor, SENTECH, is set to switch off the SABC signal by the end of December if there is no resolution to the debt owed by the SABC. The public broadcaster owes SENTECH around a billion rand as at the end of March.

So you want to know more about Sentech Television Tower in Johannesburg?📻📺 The tower was previously known as the Albert Hertzog Tower (named after the late apartheid minister of posts and telegraphs). It became better well-known as the Brixton Tower. It was built to host TV and radio transmissions. It hosted FM radio transmissions up until 1970. It was one of the first towers in the world to combine 6 FM channels simultaneously into 1 common antenna. In 2001, the name changed from Albert Hertzog Tower to Sentech Tower because naming rights were sold to Sentech. Sentech was one of South Africa’s first wireless service providers. Excavations for the land that the tower was built on started in February 1961. They managed to finish building the tower to its full height of 237m in December of that same year. The steel mast at the very top of the tower only took 3 weeks to complete. The tower is made of concrete and 300 tonnes of reinforced high-tensile, mild steel bars. The tower was designed to withstand winds of up to 200km/h.
