Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma does not know that South African immigration officers at the borders no longer give 90 days to those without a visa of course. The 90 days stamp doesn't come easy, some travellers find themselves buying the days. Those without the money to buy the days get minimum 2 weeks. And when crossing by road at Beitbridge and other border posts, you are normally asked useless questions such as why you want 90 days as if you are a terrorist. The behaviour from South African immigration officers at border points is killing business. The South African economy faces threats of investor disappointment. Although one can easily get the 90 days when flying, most African traders use road. So many reports of immigrant frustration at borders posts. It is actually far much better to travel on a permit than begging for the 90days. The current situation is Africans are disappointed in South Africa. It will kill business and drain the South African economy. As a member state of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCfTA), South Africa risks being isolated by Africa if this anti-immigration behaviour continues without restraint.

I would like to congratulate my dear friend and fellow at the African Leadership Institute, Lerato Mataboge, for being elected to lead the infrastructure and energy portfolio at the African Union. As the new Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy of the African Union Commission, Lerato will be responsible for one of the most important talking points in Africa that will help propel the continent towards closing the wide gap between itself and other continents. Lerato is a highly intelligent individual who has served as the Deputy Director of Trade for the South African government. South Africa’s loss is truly Africa’s gain, as the continent needs experienced yet youthful bureaucrats chosen for their competence, not through political deals. Africa’s transportation infrastructure is underdeveloped, with only about 53% of roads paved, compared to higher percentages in other developing regions. This inadequacy increases intra-African trade costs by approximately 30–40% making goods more expensive. Africa is struggling with digital infrastructure, with only 0.6 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people, compared to 2.1 in South Asia and 10.6 in the Middle East and North Africa. Electing a South African to this important position makes a lot of sense because it is the continental leader in this area and Lerato’s wide network in the areas of economics, trade, banking and other related financial institutions will certainly come in hand. He stresses the importance of African leaders forgoing the old, exploitative path beaten for them by Western powers, and looking to China – itself once colonized – as a new model for sovereign development.
