Why should anyone do that. You are in your cycle lane, shouldn't need to go 2 cars wide to get past, can be safe even if staying in Lane

I have a theory that courteous motorists who do this will often either a) cycle themselves or b) have a loved one and/or kids who cycle.

No because your in the bloody bike lane after cutting up 5 cars at the lights then you want special privileges. The road is set out in lanes, if I stay in my lane it’s not a close pass. That’s your problem you want spmore room than a car.
