The United States of America is uniquely equipped to be completely self sufficient with food, energy and building of infrastructure. LITERALLY!!! We are money producing and money spending machines. If the criminal politicians had not set up such a massive and intricate system of sucking our money out of view and into their own pockets, America would be a country with exquisite infrastructure and policing. We can be self sufficient like few countries can. Can Americans be strong enough to stop buying cheap Chinese products for one year? Hopefully. We do not control the world. BUT! We have the free-est economy and the hungriest purchasing power on this planet. If, as a country, we were patient during tariffs and other countries trying to manipulate us, we could break anyone….not for vengeance’s sake, but to insure that all Americans are getting the best products at the best prices. Other countries want our money…let them work for it. God Bless America.

The market is cheering President Trump’s trade deals. Many investors don’t understand how tariffs, any tariffs, can be a positive for the economy and stocks. They are not. But the market did not correct on April 3 due to 10% or 15% tariffs. It corrected because of a left tail risk that a massive re-ordering of global trade was afoot. That risk is clearly off the table. The question of who “won” the trade deals is more nuanced. On the surface, the U.S. is clearly getting great concessions from the rest of the world. But as I report from Victoria, BC, the rest of the world is playing the long game. It is not so clear that the Machiavellian approach will help the U.S. over a longer time horizon.

There's two aspects to these tariffs. Number one is reciprocality against tariffs from one country to another based on products and services that are specific. So if you're charging a 20% tariff in India, it's going to be reciprocated in the United States, and those go away pretty quickly. That actually leads to fair trade. The more complex aspect of these negotiations are around the idea of trade imbalances. When you put on tariffs to try and fix trade imbalance it's difficult because the largest economy on Earth is the United States. So really you're starting a behemoth negotiation, and it's happening in every country. You can assume that behind the scenes are two spheres of negotiations. One is let's try and reduce the imbalance of trade by buying more stuff from the United States. That's one signal. And the other, which is very easy to fix, is simply remove all tariffs. If you're going to have reciprocal tariffs at 20%, 30%, 40%, just get rid of them, bring them down to zero.
