KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has ordered an investigation into an incident in KwaNdengezi, west of Durban, where an e-hailing driver was attacked by armed security guards while transporting female passengers. According to the MEC, security guards allegedly linked to the KwaNdengezi Taxi Association harassed and intimidated the passengers, ordered the driver to drop them off, and allegedly fired shots at the vehicle’s tyres. The driver reportedly lost control of the car and collided with another vehicle. Duma condemned the incident and said investigators from the Public Regulatory Entity and Operation Shanela, together with SAPS and Metro Police, have been tasked with probing the matter. He also called on the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) to investigate the conduct of the armed security guards for possible violations of the law. The MEC said decisive action would be taken against those responsible and reaffirmed the province’s commitment to maintaining stability in the public transport sector.

In a comment posted on Instagram, the company said it was “deeply sorry” over the incident and acknowledged the seriousness of the matter. A second nearby vehicle was also targeted and torched. In response, the local community has shut down the mall this morning, which will remain closed until tensions between e-hailing operators and taxi associations are resolved.
