Today, I documented 27 seconds of my nephew Khalid’s life in our tent. He is a child who will soon turn two. They say childhood is a time of butterflies and flowers, but Khalid’s childhood is a time of flies and a tent. In these seconds, you will see his beautiful, innocent face, and you will see the flies that land on him without mercy. You will see a child who doesn’t even know how to swat these insects away from his eyes, simply because he has gotten used to them. This is his world, and this is his life. These few seconds are the summary of our life here. An eternity of intense pain condensed into fleeting moments. We watch innocence learn to coexist with ugliness, and we watch a childhood grow in the shadow of neglect and helplessness. Every second that passes is a reminder that his childhood is being stolen from him before our very eyes, and we can do nothing but watch. For this reason, and with all the pain in my heart, these 27 seconds are all I have to show you the extent of our suffering. So I’m looking for help to rent a roof over our heads, just a small room, or a humble apartment, to preserve Khalid’s childhood dignity and protect us from this daily torment. Besides sharing bags of fruit with the children at the school tent yesterday, we also delivered bags to other children and families in their tents. I enjoy capturing these beautiful moments: a fleeting smile, a light in their eyes, a moment of shyness. I share them with you so that you may see for yourselves the transformative power your donations have and to document that your gift has been put to good use. We put together 60 bags of fruit at a cost of $180. Our goal is to provide meals every day but, at present, a lack of donations is the only impediment and children all over Gaza go hungry because of it. Aid is blocked; food must be bought; donations are Gaza’s only income. Please consider making regular donations and spreading our message to others. Tradition is not the handing on of ashes but the transmission of fire. There is no other way to preserve a civilization than to set our younger generation on fire with the beauty, truth, and sheer adventure that it affords, of which they are the full and rightful inheritors. Nothing can better root or better reward them amid our current crisis of meaning. This is why Ralston College takes its students to Greece and Rome, to the very places where our civilization was forged and tested, and why we teach them these ancient languages—so that they can unlock directly the treasures of that invaluable inheritance, better understand the world they now inhabit, and share these immense riches with others. Here is a video of our first Latin program in Italy this summer, involving students from all over the world, who came together to learn this beautiful and profound language. Although most students had no knowledge of Latin at all when they arrived, they left able not just to read but also to speak it, each on fire with the flame that gives life meaning, illumination, and purpose. Seeing the direct impact of support and the smiles it can bring to those facing such difficult battles was the greatest anniversary gift we could have asked for. I am not a volunteer. I am a soldier and my work is around the clock. I do these fundraisers to open up transparency but the truth is I’m barely talking about our needs. Everyday there is a cost. Tools for digging, new socks and fungus sprays to keep their feet healthy. Medications, a drone antenna. We are the largest battalion in the 93rd Brigade and I am their Бабця. I am there day and night for them, I schedule posts and try to make things interesting online, for them. Because every on of you that sees this and support in one way, it helps them. 🐱 + 🐔 = ❤️ ​I am literally speechless! You truly cannot make this stuff up. ​I walked into the coop to check for eggs, and what do I find? A mama cat has decided that the hen house is the perfect, cozy nursery for her brand-new kittens. But the best part? Our resident hen is just standing there, looking slightly puzzled but totally unfazed, and proceeds to just... settle in and lay her egg right next to them. ​At first, you might think, “Wait, aren’t they supposed to be enemies?” In nature, these two wouldn’t usually be roommates. But here they are, two mothers sharing a space, sharing a moment, and showing a level of trust that is honestly beautiful. ​Why this matters: ​The Bond: There’s an unspoken understanding between them. Both are in their most vulnerable state—motherhood—and instead of conflict, they chose companionship. ​Coexistence: It’s a powerful reminder that "differences" are often things we are taught. These animals don't see species or "flaws"; they see a safe space and a friend. ​Support: If a hen and a cat can coexist and support each other's "maternal duties" in a tiny wooden box, what’s our excuse? ​We can choose to be threatened by what we don’t understand, or we can choose to be kind. I’m choosing kindness (and maybe getting a bigger nesting box!).
