The Moon through an amateur telescope. Did you know we NEVER see the back of the Moon aka The Dark Side? Apparently this is because the Moon is tidally locked, meaning it rotates on its axis at the same rate it orbits the Earth, meaning we only ever get to see one side. Isn’t science wonderful?

I just filmed this video at 6PM in South Carolina. Sun and Moon both in the sky, and the moon isn't full. Therefore, the Earth is not shadowing the moon.

On January 14, 2005, the Huygens probe descending through Titan’s atmosphere revealed one of the rarest views in space exploration. From Saturn’s moon Titan, Earth and the Moon crossed in front of the Sun as tiny shadows nearly a billion miles away. What makes it even more incredible is how rare the alignment was. A perfectly central Earth and Moon transit from Saturn’s system happens only about twice every 1,000 years. From that distance, our entire planet looked small enough to disappear into the sunlight.

If we’re on a spinning ball, and I can clearly see both the sun and the moon in the sky right now during the day… What is the other side of the globe seeing? Shouldn’t they be in complete darkness—with the moon on their side? But it’s not. The sun and moon are both above me. So how can one be lighting the day and the other lighting the night—if they’re in the same sky? Something doesn’t add up.
