Musicians discovering mod 12 arithmetic for the first time and acting like it's new, but it's been around since late 1700s.

Ok well I'm not a musician so its new to me

Bro, it's easy. You're already doing it, you're just not used to thinking of it this way: Mark the root note as 0, and then mark the notes that chromatically follow with 1,2,3... Then all scales and chords can be represented as number sequences. It's a 12-note # solfége

@GRReynolds3 What's the matter with you? He just politely said he's not a musician, and you immediately come back using the phrase "root note" and then "chromatically" and then solfège. Do you think he's suddenly going to understand those terms through some arcane osmotic process!

@DylanBanestrdb Its cool man, I just blocked him lol. He was making my head hurt

👀 This is why I’m a drummer. 🤭

It's just replacing 12 letters with 12 numbers, while also always sliding the scale so that zero is the root note.

ohhhhhhhh shiiiiit what he’s saying makes sense actually *stares off in distance*

Really? With it spelled out like that? And demonstrated? And visually represented?

I can't play, read, or write music. Do you? (serious question)

A typical triad is 1-3-5. Thats your first note ir the root, then count alphabetically to the next note in a whole step alphabetically G= 1 B = 3 D = 5. Thats the first part. What he's doing is using a scale starting at zero the using chromatic scale. Those are halfsteps.

Same. Don't understand any of this stuff. Only understand what feels good to my soul.

I actually can play a little guitar, and stuff like this is why I can’t play it good. I dont even understand what numbers he’s talking about, it isn’t the frets so Im lost.

Stanley Jordan studied with composer and music theorist Milton Babbit in the late 1970s and early 80s. Babbit was one of the leading theorists of atonality, which built on European 12-tone music. Jordan applied it in novel musical contexts.

All he's doing is using a key/mode agnostic system where rather than naming notes with letters, he's using the number 0 to represent the root of the key. This allows his to quickly shift keys/modes/scales in a song and not lose his fingering.

I know exactly what he is talking about.

God bless you brother. I've always admired musicians and what they do, and how easy they make it look.

this is really how it’s done… counting intervals between notes… he knows exactly what he’s doing.

i also have no idea. i just hit some notes that sound good to me

Is that Stanley Jordan? Absolute legend

Wtf is this dude even talking about lol

I don't know Karate, but I know Karaze!

his tism is showing

you should hear Tory Slusher she is a player like Stanley.

Thank you...Will have to check her out.

It's pretty simple but it's not super practical to me

Anyone remember which 90's movie he (Stanley Jordan) was featured in (dont google!)??

Thought this was lil wayne for like .5 seconds

Wha?

One of the greatest guitarists of all time!

I’ve been doing this for 30 years

Who's the dude?

Stanley you are the most underrated guitarist.

this is actually the best way to understand music theory

I think I'm too old to learn at this point.

@3atm3tvitter No, never! You can totally 100% do it

@3atm3tvitter It takes time and patience....2 things i don't have.

Dude lady is insane

homie been the innovator for the better part of half a century. bless.

I love Rick Beato's musician interviews (but this may be just be a lesson), and I don't understand anything about music theory etc. 😂

Why people nowadays has turned guitar into something so complex? What's the point? Do you think Hendrix, Clapton or BB king knew/know about that crap? Use your hearing, feel the notes going through your musical brain let them travel up and down your body....
