I rode in a Zoox (self-driving Amazon car) today! Overall an amazing experience; another rare time where the present truly looks, feels, and sounds like the future Waymo set a *very* high standard for me to compare to but I feel like Zoox was able to achieve a similar level of polish throughout the experience Pros: โ€ข App is great and actually works (rare!) โ€ข Driving is very smooth, about the same as a Waymo (both of which are nicer and smoother than most humans) โ€ข The leg space and seat layout are great and unparalleled. There's drink holders, usb ports, wireless charging, and music control on touch screen โ€ข 10/10 SFX, voice, animations, and subtle details. They matter! Cons: โ€ข Service area is small (mostly East Mission + SOMA, see below) โ€ข I feel a little less safe in Zoox versus Waymo. Waymo still has a driver's seat, a steering wheel, and more importantly, a dashboard which shows me what the car sees and what it is thinking and planning. Zoox has none of these (the touch screens don't show me LIDAR or AI predictions), which does feel super cool, but will take me a bit to get used to โ€ข The vehicle draws attention to itself more so than Waymo due to its irregularity, which I dislike because I don't feel safe in NE Mission and SOMA (but this isn't really Zoox's fault, is it? I trust it to not crash me!) โ€ข No Spotify integration but I could choose songs from Zoox FM Misc: โ€ข My pickup time was 7min, which is on par with or ~2min above my average Waymo pickup time โ€ข My ride was free. San Francisco, CA (JUL.04 + 05 2026)- The Sunset Projectโ„ข๏ธ has been busy over the last 24 hours, trying to sort out the carnage in the Bay Area last night. No matter how you look at it, Waymo brought several areas of the city to a complete standstill and blocked emergency vehicles, as well as all other traffic for hours on end. So far here are the factors that caused the total system failure (all typical issues regularly shown here on the program)- 1. Targeting events. Waymos were damaged and one OJAI destroyed from external attacks. 2. Widescale freeze events due to failure to proceed through an intersection or stop sign controlled intersection for a period of time that requires a remote supervisor to help. 3. Power outage stoplights. We found a couple examples of blinking stop lights which Waymo continues to struggle without supervisor assistance. 4. Heavy pedestrian interference. As a Waymo fails to pass through an intersection or make progress on the street for a certain period of time, they appear to require supervisor assistance to validate a route. This process could not be completed in a timely manner as the supervisor controlled route planning system was overwhelmed by too many vehicle requests. 5. Long periods of frozen vehicles in traffic caused several Waymos to become bricked most likely from dead batteries. None of these are new issues. These are all the same general safety critical failures that we see every day from the Waymo Driver system. Once these issues are combined at scale on a busy evening, you effectively have a complete shutdown of a city. We will wait for Waymo to make the same PR announcement that they always make- Some of their vehicles were impacted, and they have learned a lot from what happened. They wonโ€™t ever tell us what they learned or how they will fix it, but they always tell us how much they are learning. Today I witnessed hours of livestreams dedicated to fundraising for the Karmelo Anthony family. Panels praising Karmelo Anthony. Calling him a โ€œhero.โ€ Saying HE is the victim. Saying HE deserves justice. Saying HE โ€œdid nothing wrong.โ€ Meanwhile Austin Metcalf is no longer with us. Austin doesnโ€™t get to go home. Austin doesnโ€™t get to graduate. Austin doesnโ€™t get to hug his family again. His parents are still grieving a child they will never get back while strangers online celebrate the person accused of taking his life. And in the last 24 hours alone, the fundraising connected to Karmelo grew past $600,000. Hundreds of thousands of dollars flowing in while people openly glorified a man who stabbed Austin in the heart, and mocked the suffering of a dead childโ€™s family. This case has become so toxic that people have been threatened, doxxed, swatted, and harassed simply for defending Austin or demanding accountability (Myself included). There are people sitting in jail right now because of threats tied to this madness. Yet, Dominique Alexander went live yesterday, calling for justice for Karmelo. And these livestream panels continue day and night, pushing the narrative that the real tragedy is what happened to Karmelo. No. The tragedy is that a teenager was killed. Austin doesnโ€™t get to hug his family again. His parents are still grieving a child they will never get back while strangers online celebrate the person accused of taking his life. And in the last 24 hours alone, the fundraising connected to Karmelo grew past $600,000. Hundreds of thousands of dollars flowing in while people openly glorified a man who stabbed Austin in the heart, and mocked the suffering of a dead childโ€™s family. I only did a short Uber "shift" today and went ahead and wrapped up early for Sunday night and I'm back home. You may ask what's important about that to you JC? Well, let me tell you. As of today, it has now been exactly one year since my last critical intervention with Tesla FSD. It was on v13.2.8, and it took place in a rural part of east Texas (Ainsworth, TX). At that time, FSD didn't appear to recognize that a school bus on the opposite side of the highway was in the process of putting out their extendable stop sign, so I disengaged by manually braking for the school bus. This moment is memorialized in the first part of this clip. Fast forward to version 14.2, and FSD had handled school buses perfectly. The latest example from a few weeks ago in the second part of this clip, but at this point, I have seen this over and over now with zero times ever having to disengage. Also, not only has it been 12 months since my last critical engagement, it's been 42,847 miles since that disengagement (thanks to lots of Uber and a handful of road trips in the past 12 months). Don't get me wrong, I disengage multiple times per day every day doing Uber for non-critical things such as faulty Uber pins, passengers wanting to go to a different spot than the pin they previously set, passengers wanting to go a specific route of their choosing, Tesla NAV wanting to case the entire neighborhood block to get to a destination instead of just making the damn left turn ๐Ÿ˜‚. But none of these things mean a hill of beans to where we are going, which is saving lives. If driving in an 8-figure route around a Wal Mart parking lot instead of disengaging FSD can save even one life, I will do that for an hour (look kids, Big Ben, Parliament). I am certainly no expert, but if Tesla FSD isn't the greatest software ever developed in the history of man, then whip me, beat me and call me Edna. Because I'm clueless to what could be better. The car had a connection to a prior DUI. A prior DUI, on a registration, does not give you the right to drag every person out of a vehicle and search them. The passenger, and the young girl in the back seat, arenโ€™t suspects. Ordering them out and patting them down without independent, reasonable suspicion for each person, is a 4th Amendment violation. And this is the pattern we keep seeingโ€ฆ ICE flags a vehicle, treats everyone inside like a criminal, and people disappear. These events, the Springvalley Middle School attack, the Falkland kill list, and the tragic Tumbler Ridge school massacre resulting in the deaths of eight, mostly young people, all taking place this year in B.C., show that public awareness and attention to the topic of school safety is an important matter of public interest. Lori-Ann describes how, despite the potential threat, the reasonable uncertainty, and the nearest police detachment being 30 minutes away, no RCMP officers or security personnel were assigned to keep watch for a reasonable period during school hours. "It shouldn't have to take a tragedy for things to change," said the father. Bringing this story, the real story, to light wasn't an easy task.
