This is what you call songwriting, and the fact that it’s autobiographical, considering the content, is incredible, because what she’s singing was and remained the truth!! That’s why I really believe that despite all the hundreds of millions of dollars and the gigantic global fame, she always seemed to have her feet firmly planted on the ground, and now that I’m thinking about it, it is precisely why she was able to say no to Elvis wanting her publishing for ‘I Will Always Love You’ when he wanted to record it, and she said no!! Not no to his doing it, but no to just giving them all her publishing rights!! And we all know how THAT story turned out!! Just think…if she had given in for Elvis, it would be mainly Tom Parker’s descendants that would be drowning in the hundreds of millions of dollars that song made!! Had an interesting conversation this weekend with an older relative who's politics are "just be a good person". She's relatively wealthy and gives to the types of causes you would expect this type of person to give. She gives her time too. She is actually a good person. I asked her if she was ever concerned that the causes she gave to would reduce the proportion of people like her in the world. She said that she thought the opposite. That she was inspired by the generosity and kindness of others, and that by giving she would increase the proportion of people like her. I said I believed she inspires her peers, but her peers aren't the people she's giving money to. Do they become productive and generous people, like her? Or is she just increasing the proportion of people who are takers and don't give anything back? Despite decades of generosity, this was clearly a question she had never thought about. The implications made her uncomfortable, and the conversation basically ended after that.
