In my public television special “The Story of Fascism in Europe,” we learn from Europeans whose families lived through fascism that a strong democracy requires vigilant and engaged citizens. We are all participants, we are all responsible, and freedom isn’t guaranteed. That lesson feels especially urgent today, as we watch extremist forces dismantle protections for immigrants, people living in poverty, and marginalized communities. They're counting on us to be intimidated and to stay quiet — but social justice organizations, such as Sojourners, refuse to be silent. For years, Sojourners has been doing the essential work of rooting Christianity not in nationalism, but in social justice, by equipping congregations with tools to bring clarity where there's confusion, hope where there's despair, and love where there's fear. Like Sojourners, I see Christian nationalism as a perversion of my faith.
