/ Key takes from this week's Game Souk - the not-in-my-backyard (NIMBY) movement against AI data centers sparks a conversation about data centers in space, and Megan Ellison’s new game fuels mistrust. Fortnite's return to Apple App Store, Roblox's age-gated profiles were activated last week. (Join us LIVE Thurs 9 am ET on X @daltonan)

/ As of May 19, 2026, Fortnite is back on the App Store, with Tim Sweeney declaring on X, “this as the beginning of the end of Apple Tax Worldwide.” On May 20, 2026, Fortnite was the 2nd Top Free Action Game and was the 14th on the overall Top Downloaded game on iOS.

/ @SignumKeshav took us through the court details. Apple appealed to the Supreme Court, seeking a temporary injunction against the court-mandated changes brought by Epic Games. Our analysis shows roughly $300M could drop to Epic's bottom line for every $1B that leaves Apple's ecosystem.

/ @milesaboveny on the long road back: the devs never built mobile Fortnite games because Fortnite wasn't on mobile. Now that it is back on mobile, UEFN will have to adapt how it makes games to better fit mobile players. This could take years. Roblox’s platform and community are mobile native and already control a substantial portion of the mobile market.

/ According to a new Gallup poll, 70% of Americans oppose AI data centers in their area, with 50% saying data centers’ impact on resources like water and electricity was their top concern. @MikeEdwards discusses how the feelings are real but practical fears around water/power are increasingly solvable with behind-the-meter power and liquid cooling.

/ @Signum_Eliza tie the data center upset to a broader theme of anxiety-driven anger. Yes, people are mistrustful of Annapurna’s Mixtape receiving a “perfect 10” because of Annapurna’s connection to Megan Ellison, Larry Ellison’s daughter. A much larger example could be the NIMBY movement around data centers and a mistrust of these companies and their billionaires.

/ The economy is moving in 2 directions - those who own the capital behind AI and those who bear the costs, and this continues to widen. Mike sees our seesaw feelings & history with Nuclear power as the most apt metaphor. Expect the messaging battle over AI infrastructure to continue.

/ Why build data centers in space? It's nobody's backyard, there is constant sunlight for power, and it is freezing, so no water coolant is needed. Meaning that data centers in space address environmental concerns, surroundings, and resource protection. Jeff Bezos said in a CNBC interview this week that he sees a world where data centers in space are achievable by 2030.

/ Roblox continues to release its new age-gating protocols this week. New Games can now launch only to 16+ or to trusted friends, requiring 500 “engaged players” over 60 days before under-16s can play. @jaaay64 explains that the metric engaged players has yet to be defined by Roblox, and based on his own games, simply playing the game is not considered “engaged players.”

/ @XanCapus sees some upside to Roblox age-gating measures: real parental control. Parents can set maturity levels, extend chat for verified friends, or block specific games outright, allowing parents the final say on games that even Roblox rates as age-appropriate.
